In connection with the blast furnace smelting of Japanese iron sands, the authors have studied the effects of titanim on the properties of the slags for several years.
This paper contains their experimental results of the optical characteristics, inversions, melting or dissociation points of the slag-forming minerals and the systems of TiO
2-SiO
2, CaO-TiO
2, CaO-TiO
2-SiO
2, CaO-Al
2O
2-TiO
2and CaO-Al
2O
2-TiO
2-SiO
2.
From these data and diagrams, the theory of crystallisation enables them to predict what substances will separate from the sloA, vly cooled melts of the above systems, the order of their separation, and their corresponding temperatures.
They also discovered a new form of perovskite (CaO-TiO
2).
The melting furnaces and other apparatus particularly adapted for carrying out the themal analysis and also the methods of the investigations are described.
