The record of the existence of petroleum in Germany is so ancient, yet it is notuntil 1860 that the drilling was ever so systematically performed. In 1873 only 300 barrels of crude oil were produced in the Wietze Oil District, representing the first activity, in the field recorded. Due to the improvement of the drilling machine, coupled with the advance of the art, the output showed gradual increase until suspence came in the form of the Great War, after which event mining engineering getting warmer again, owing to the rise in price, the output of petroleum in the last year in Germany wit nessed the figure twice or more as great as that before the War.
The total petroleum production in Germany, however, bears only the proportion of some 10 per cent of the whole demand in the same country, the greater proportion of it being from abroad. The list of import consists mainly of: Gasoline 46%, Gas oil 16%, Lubricant 13%, Crude oil 11%, countries of export being America, Russia, and Mexico, the proportion 31%, 22%, 10% respectively.
The oil producing provinces in Germany may be divided into 3 parts:(i) North German Province, (ii) Rhein Oil Province, (iii) Subalpine Oil Province, and it is at the Hannover Oil field, in North German Oil Province, and at the Thuringia Oil field, struck recently by chance, where the drilling is being periormed somewhat payably. In the Wietze Oil District the oil sand mining method is being employed to some advantage.
In Germany, with the geophysical prospecting apparatus many promising salt domes have been struck, though many of them are left untouched yet. When they are invested with requisite funds and American “Wildcat” comes in vogue, Germany may, I believe, be one of the greatest petroleum producing countries.in the world.
