We studied the production of metallic lead by the electrolysis of the fused salts:-PbCl
2-PbS-KOl ternary system. Results obtained:
(1) Current efficiency 90-95% was obtained. In that case the conditions of electrolysis are as follows: Electrolytic voltage 3 volts, Electrolytic temperature 520°C, Electrolyte PbS 10-16%, KCl 8-15%, PbCl
2 remain.
(2) Above fused salts are proper electrolyte, having low melting point and high electric conductivity.
(3) Composition of the PbS-PbCl
2-KCl is KCl 21%, PbS 8%, PbCl
2 71% and eutectic temperature is 409°C. Its electric conductivity is considerably high and, for example, at the range of KCl 30%, PbS 30%, PbCl
2 70%. It is about 0.6-3.0 Ω
-1 cm
-1.
(4) Extraction per centage is near 100 per cent and purity of obtained metallic lead is influenced by the properties of lead bearing ores.
