      The fluidity of spheroidal graphite cast iron was measured using a vacuum fluidity test equipment. The movement of flowing molten iron was dynamically recorded by means of a high speed camera. A linear relationship was obtained between fluidty length and tube diameter or the square root suction pressure. Fluidity length increased with increasing Si content up to 3.2 %, near the eutectic point, whereas over 3.5 % Si, it decreased with increasing Si content. From a dynamic observation of metal flow, flow life was changed by Si content. It was the longest near the eutectic point because superheat increased. Critical pressure necessary for initiating flow increased with increasing Si content. Microstructures within the fluidity specimens have been classified into three regions ; ledeburite, mottle and spheroidal graphite. Each region length changed by Si content. The ledeburite region decreased with increasing Si content.

      In top-blow and under-blow sand molding, under-blow process has not yet been optimized compared with the top-blow one, where molding sand by under-blow is blown into the flask through the bend pipe. The behavior in the bend pipe is not made clear, because the sand is of a cohesive granular material and pneumatic conveying of molding sand has not been studied so much. This paper deals with the analysis of flow characteristics in a L-form pipeline with aeration parts. It was clarified that aeration has the effects of fluidizing the molding sand fludized and removing the residual sand. Furthermore, the numerical simulation, taking into consideration the motion of individual particles contacting each other, is executed to predict the molding sand behavior and the effect of aeration on it. The simulation results more or less corresponded to the experiments, and reasonably explain the influence of aeration. The simulation method is useful for obtaining the optimal conditions in the pneumatic conveying of cohesive molding sand.

      SIALON was chosen as a ceramic horn for transmitting ultrasonic vibration to molten metals, because SIALON has high strength at high temperatures, high thermal shock resistance, small change in elastic modulus in a wide range of temperature, and low reactivity with molten metals. Ultrasonic vibration through the SIALON horn and effects of ultrasonic vibration on graphite structures of cast irons solidified were investigated. At room temperature, the SIALON horn vibrated at a frequency of 19 kHz and at the amplitude of 20 μm. When one end was immersed in molten cast iron, the SIALON horn vibrated at a slightly reduced frequency and at a reduced amplitude of 11∼16 μm. Graphite structures of cast irons solidified with ultrasonic vibration were fine and straight in flake graphite cast irons, and fine and spherical in C/V cast irons and in spheroidal graphite cast irons. The diameter of the fine spheroidal graphite was about 13 μm.

      The uniaxial type and plane bending type fatigue tests of Zn alloys were performed. Eleven alloys were tested. They included existing alloys such as ZAS (Zn-4 Al-3 Cu), ZA alloys such as ZA 27 (Zn-27 Al-2 Cu), and alloys devloped newly such as Z 1010 (Zn-10 Al-10 Cu). The results were follows. (1) The fatigue strength of 104 cycles improves with the tensile strength of alloys increases. The fatigue strength of Z 1010 in the uniaxial test is 222 MPa, which is 30 % higher than that of ZAS (169 MPa). (2) The fatigue strength of 106∼107 cycles does not depend on the tensile strength of alloys. The fatigue strength of the uniaxial test and the bending test are 130 MPa and 100 MPa respectively, which are settled values. (3) The ratio of the fatigue strength to the tensile strength decreases with the strength of alloys increases.

      The diffusion bonding of spheroidal graphite cast iron (FCD) to alumina ceramics (Al2O3) was carried out at various temperatures and pressures in a vacuum using the combination of a 20 μm thick titanium foil and 10∼1000 μm thick copper foils as insert metals. The quantitative analysis and scanning electron microscope observations, taken by an electron probe X-ray microanalyser, were performed in order to clarify the composition of interlayers formed at the bond interfaces. The tensile strengths of the joints were also investigated. A tensile strength of 71.6 MPa was obtained at a bonding temperature of 1223 K at the joint bonded with a 20 μm thick Ti foil on the Al2O3 side and 1000 μm thick Cu foil on the FCD side. It can be assumed that the eutectic liquid phase of Ti2Cu3 and TiCu3 which formed at about 1153 K, reduced the thermal stress caused by the differences between the thermal expansion tendencies of Al2O3 and FCD.
