      The plate casting of alminum alloy was casted by using the shot as a packing in place of sand on evaporative pattern casting process, and the effects of packing on mechanical properties of casting were investigated. When the shot was used as a packing, tensile strength and proof stress of casting were about 1.1 times that of the case where sand was used, grain size decreased slightly, and solidification time reduced to about one-half value, while Brinell hardness of casting was almost same value of the case packed by sand. Furthermore, thermal conductivities and bulk densities of the packed bed by each packing were measured. The high cooling capacity of the packed bed by shot was almost dependent on the increment of bulk density, while the effect of thermal conductivity was not significant.

      Cu-Sn and Cu-Zn alloys with different solute contents were cast, and spectroscopic surface reflectance of the alloys was analyzed. In a range of the wavelength from 450 nm to 650 nm, sub-spaces composed of 2 and 3 eigen vectors were designed using the algorithm of principal component analysis. The spectroscopic distribution was reconstructed in the sub-space with high accuracy. In the Cu-Sn alloy, a projection onto the primary eigen vector took the maximum at a tin content of 7 mass % , and the projection onto the secondary eigen vector decreased monotonically with tin content. In the Cu-Zn alloy, the color changed complicatedly with zinc content in the binary sub-space. The surface reflectance of copper alloy castings was quantitatively predicted from the solute content in the alloy castings, and the solute content of the alloy was estimated from the spectroscopic surface reflectance.

      For developing high-strength Zn alloys, Zn-4 Al-X Cu-0.02 Mg (X=0∼10) alloys are examined. More than 3 % Cu-content alloy produces ε phase, which improves the strength of the alloys. The tensile strength of commercial alloy of ZAS (Zn-4.1 Al-3 Cu-0.04 Mg) for molds is 215 MPa, Z0408 (Zn-4 Al-8 Cu-0.02 Mg) shows 295 MPa. On the other hand, the casting of high Cu-content alloys for molds required high temperature, those of Z0408 is 823 K, while those of ZAS is 703 K.

      An investigation was carried out to clarify the microstructures of semi-solid Fe-C alloys made by the powder compaction of pure iron powders and cast iron powders with eutectic composition. In the rapid heating of mixed compact, the probability of the collisions of solids was much lower than that in the stirring method. The size of the solid particles was therefore expected to be much smaller than that in the stirring method. The shape of the solid particles was spheroidal as those acquired by the stirring method. The average size of the solid particles was 50 μm on the polished surface. The solid particles, which were former by pure iron, had martensite structure. The microstructure of matrix was fine ledeburite. It was found that the slurry made by the method had fine microstructure and stability of fine solid particles against isothermal holding ideal for thixocasting.

      While ductile iron production amounts have exceeded all predictions little is generally known regarding the origin, or discovery, of the ductile iron generally produced today, i.e., the history of the development of magnesium treated ductile iron at the laboratories of the International Nickel Company. The steps taken leading to the reliable production of spheroidal graphite in cast irons have been outlined in this review, culminating in the announcement of its discovery in 1948. Subsequently, measures were undertaken to market this new material and to defend the patentability of its invention. Growth in the production of ductile iron has since steadily increased as process and product impovements result in an ever wider range of applications.
