This paper looks into wedding rites of a Hakka community in Sarawak, Malaysia and the taboos surrounding the rites. The main focus is on the taboo of the ‘dangerous bride’. The results are based on ethnological data that are collected in the field during marriage ceremonies. This paper describes and discusses the engendered pollutions attributed to women and brides, the significance and beliefs of wedding rites and taboos, and women’s social roles in marriage.
