Prof. Uchiyama wrote 182 books. The contents reflect the Zeitgeist of when they were published. From 1970 to 1980, he published almost 150 books. These books contributed to an increase in public awareness about cognitive behavior therapy in Japan. His books and other published works included 154 coauthors. Among them, Sakano was the most frequent coauthor, but Prof. Uchiyama also coauthored publications with 504 other scholars. It is speculated that Prof. Uchiyama intended to disseminate cognitive behavior therapy in Japan by inviting colleagues to coauthor his books; this tradition was passed on to subsequent generations. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, virtually all of Prof. Uchiyama's books are now out of print. The present article examines Prof. Uchiyama's contributions in comparison with other prominent authors in the field of cognitive behavior therapy.

Many studies of self-report psychological scales have been conducted in the area of cognitive behavior therapy, including in psychological and medical fields. The current situation is that too many duplicative constructs have been created, and many studies do not have adequate methodological quality; this has led to a lack of information necessary for clinical practice and further research. To change this prevailing situation, the COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments) checklist was developed, based on various fields of research, but focusing on health measurement. In order to plan a successful research plan, the present article first introduces a brief overview of the COSMIN checklist. Next, 4 important issues are explained: (a) planning sample size, (b) evaluating test-retest reliability and measurement error, (c) hypothesis testing, and (d) evaluating responsiveness and interpretability. How these issue comply with the COSMIN checklist is indicated, alongside concrete examples of writing a research report.

Translation and cultural adaptation for patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures allows a comparison of cross-cultural data and enables datasets to be pooled worldwide. The quality of the data derived from translated measures relies on the accuracy of the translation. A task force of the ISPOR (International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research) provided useful guidelines for enhancing the quality of translation and cultural adaptation for patient-reported outcome measures. The present study aimed to enhance understanding of the translation and cultural adaptation process for patient-reported outcomes, based on the ISPOR task force guidelines, focusing on 10 steps: (a) preparation, (b) forward translation, (c) reconciliation, (d) back translation, (e) back translation review, (f) harmonization, (g) cognitive debriefing, (h) review of cognitive debriefing results and finalization, (i) proofreading, and (j) final report. In addition, a detailed explanation is provided based on published articles, and considerations relating to translation and cultural adaptation are discussed.

The purpose of the present controlled case study was to examine the effects of Individual Preventive Behavioral Parent Training (IP-BPT) on the behavior of mothers and children referred from a perinatal medical center and department of pediatrics of a university hospital. Mother-child pairs (N=12) participated in the study. Half of the pairs were assigned randomly to the intervention group, and their matched pairs to a waitlist group. Individual Preventive Behavioral Parent Training, which began after an intake session, consisted of 5 sessions on basic parenting skills and 4 on problem solving. Outcomes were measured with the Parenting Skills Scale (Version 2), and the Children's Social Behavior Rating Scale. Participants were assessed during the intake session (Time 1) and 1 week after the last session (Time 2). The participants in the waitlist control group were assessed using the same instruments at the same time points. The treatment group and the control group did not differ significantly on any parameter. After Individual Preventive Behavioral Parent Training, the mothers' parenting skills were found to have improved on the measures of information and interests for children, and communication; the children's behavioral tendencies also improved, especially in relation to facilitative behavior.

Behavioral activation therapy is a brief structured treatment for depression that aims to activate clients in specific ways in order to increase the number of rewarding experiences in their lives. The present case report details the treatment of a 29-year-old-man who had taken a leave of absence from his job due to major depression. The intervention featured behavioral activation, using an avoidance behavior and activity schedule. There were fourteen 45-minute sessions and 2 follow-up sessions. The results showed that the participants Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) score was reduced from 65 to 37. A year later, his score of 37 on the SDS was maintained, suggesting a long-term effect of behavioral activation therapy. Behavioral activation therapy may be effective at treating individuals who have depression as a result of avoidance behavior, rumination, or a disturbance of life patterns, and in providing support for return to work.
