    Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the photoluminescence spectra of EuS, EuSe, and EuTe have been studied systematically. Photoluminescence band having a nearly Gaussian line shape has been analyzed by the configuration coordinate model, and the Huang-Rhys factors and phonon energies for the relaxed exciton state have been determined for the first time. From an oscillatory structure in the spectra, it has been found that the magnetic exciton state couples with the LO phonons strongly. Further, it has been found that the half-width of the photoluminescence band changes depending on the phase transition from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic phase, which has been interpreted by the change in the electron-phonon coupling strength due to the change in the spatial extension of the exciton wave function at the magnetic phase transition.

    Emission and excitation spectra of the luminescence associated with Pb2+ centers in CdI2 layered crystals have been investigated. Excitation in the absorption band of the center induces an emission band with fine vibrational structures at the energy near the absorption band, and a broad emission band with large Stokes shift. Measurements of the decay time and time-resolved emission spectra reveal that the former band consists of two parts originating from (3Eu, 3A2u) and 3A1u states of Pb2+ with D3d symmetry. The low energy broad band is ascribed to the emission from a relaxed state of excitons of CdI2 perturbed by Pb2+. Thermally activated transfer of energy is found to take place from the excited states of Pb2+ into the perturbed exciton state.

    Reflectivity spectrum of YIG was measured at room temperature in the Y3+, 4p core excitation region. The optical constants are obtained by a multi-angle method. Two broad spectral bands at 29.3 and 33.3, eV and five small structures at 20.2, 22.5, 27.3, 36.5 and 40, eV were newly found in ε 2 spectrum. The spectral structures are assigned; the large spectral band at 33.3, eV is made up of two transitions from Y, 4p6 1S0 to Y, 4p5, 5s1 (3/2, , 1/2), (1/2, , 1/2), where the first member in the parenthesis indicates the total angular momentum j of hole and second specifies j of electron, the structure 29.3, eV is made of a transition to Y, 4p5, 4d1 1P1. In YIG the energy positions of Y, 4p5, 5s1 (3/2, , 1/2), (1/2, , 1/2) are about same in Y3+ free ion, but Y, 4p5, 4d1 1P1 is shifted by 5.7, eV.

    The incoherent inelastic neutron scattering study in a KHCO3 single crystal is reported. KHCO3 crystal contains (HCO3)2 dimers linked by hydrogen-bonds. Neutron scattering experiments were done in order to study the hydrogen motions in the dimer. Two OH bending modes were detected, with polarizations one in the dimer plane and the other out of this plane. The obtained results were analyzed by comparing with recent infrared, Raman and powder neutron scattering data. The angular dependence of the neutron scattering spectra was found to be very useful to identify the hydrogen modes in crystalline states.

    Luminescence from self-trapped excitons in high-purity CdI2 has been studied at liquid nitrogen temperature under intense excitation by a pulsed nitrogen laser. Luminescence intensity was carefully measured by changing excitation density and length of the excited region on a crystal surface. Obtained results are well explained by introducing a stimulated emission process into radiative decay channels of the self-trapped excitons. The net optical gain depends strongly on the excitation density and is estimated as 6, cm-1 in its maximum value which is extremely smaller than the previously reported one. Discussions will be made on consistency among the excitation-density dependence, the excitation-length dependence and the luminescence decay profiles.
