Recently, semiconductor microcrystal-doped glasses have been extensively studied. The motivation behind the studies is mainly the great potential for photonic applications. In speci-fic, they are powerful candidates for the photonic devices such as photonic shutters, switches and memories.
Commercial optical sharp-cut filter glasses are well-known as the traditional semiconductor-doped glasses. However, the amount and composition of semiconductor dopants are strictly li-mited since they are prepared through melting and quenching process at elevated tempera-tures. Therefore, new preparation techniques have been developed, and thus high amount and various kinds of semiconductors can be doped in the glasses nowadays. This paper reviews the various techniques to prepare semiconductor microcrystal-doped glasses, and properties and new applications of the glasses.
