    Extension of lasing to shorter wavelengths, especially into the x-ray region, has been a longstandingsubject in the scientific research. After various efforts over many years, soft x-ray amplificationhas been demonstrated in 1984. Rapid progress has been made since then in improvingthe performance of the x-ray lasers. Recent development of the ultrashort, high powerlasers opens a new possibility for developing compact, high rep-rate x-ray lasers.

    Outstanding progress in soft x-ray lasers. has been made during these 10 years since thefirst demonstration of soft x-ray amplification in 1984. This paper reviews current efforts andprogress in extensive approaches to realize soft x-ray lasers as a laboratory tool. The use ofoptical-field-induced ionization by an ultrashort high-intensity laser is a promising approach. Two types of a soft x-ray laser based on the recombination and the electron collision excitationfollowing the optical-field-induced ionization are discussed. The significant progress in the reductionof the necessary pump energy of a conventional collisional scheme and the demonstration of a large gain-length product in a conventional recombination scheme are also described.In addition to these laser-based approaches, the first demonstration of a capillary discharge XUV laser based on an electron collision excitation is presented.

    Some new frontiers to be opened by x-ray lasers are discussed. Besides the most famousand promising application to x-ray microscopy for the observasion of living cells, x-ray lasersare expected to advance various kinds of photoelectron microscopies to higher spatial andenergy resolutions. Non-linear mixing of x-ray laser pulses with optical lasers is expected to expand wavelength tunability. Pumping by optical lasers and probing by x-ray lasers will be oneof the most promising applications of x-ray lasers.

    Study of semiconductor process using synchrotron radiation (SR) started about ten yearsago. SR stimulated gas source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is considered to be in the mostadvanced stage. Characteristics of SR gas source MBE using Si2H6 and SiH2Cl2 gases are investigated. To investigate the reaction mechanisms with SR stimulated processes, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy using buried metal layer substrate (BML-IRAS) has been developpedand applied to the in situ observation of surface SiHn species during the SR depositionof a-Si. Another important subject in this field is the material selectivity observed inseveral reactions, which is considered to be an unique phenomena of the core electron excitationsand may be due to the difference of the electronic excited state lifetime. I expect that the X-ray laser having characteristics of high intensity and monochromaticity and ultra short pulsemay bring a break-through into the dynamical study of the core electron excitations.

    Efficiencies of 30 laser dyes for the atomic vapor laser isotope Separation (AVLIS) are experimentally evaluated with a dye laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd : YAG laser. Onthe other hand, a simulation code is developed to describe the laser action of Rhodamine 6G, and the dependence of the laser efficiency on the pump wavelength is calculated. Followingconclusions are obtained by these considerations : space : 1) Pyrromethene 567 showed 16% higher laser efficiency than Rhodamine 6G by 532 nm pumping, and Pyrromethene 556 has anability to provide better efficiency by green light pumping with a Cu vapor laser; 2) Kiton red 620 and Rhodamine 640, whose efficiencies were almost the same as Rhodamine 6G by 532nm pumping, will show better efficiencies by two-wavelength pumping with a Cu vapor laser.

    The Lambert-Beer law holding for pulsed lights transmitted through a scattering mediumwas examined using a streak camera. The Lambert-Beer law dynamic range is found to be limitedby floor levels that are caused by scattered photons and are controllable by the use of atemporal gate on the transmitted pulse. The dynamic range improvement obtained for a scatteringmedium of 2.8 cm-1 scattering coefficient of a thickness of 80 mm by a temporal gate of 60 ps was as much as 50 dB and the Lambert-Beer law dynamic rang reached to 140 dB.

    A novel resonator, “Gauss-core resonator”, designed to yield a highly focusing beam wasapplied to a high-power cw CO2 laser. An output coupler has a circular partial-reflection regionin the center surrounded by an antireflection region. The phase difference betweenbeams passing through the two regions is structurally canceled out by the design of the outputcoupler. Main beam mode operating in TEM00 was determined by the partial-reflection regionexisting in the “core” of the output coupler. A diffraction beam spread from the center of theoptical path in the cavity is amplified by a laser medium. By combining part of the core beamtransmitted from the partial-reflection region with the amplified diffraction beam, a 6.2 kWdiffraction-limited output beam with the M2 factor of 1.7 was obtained. In laser materials processing, we can cut a 1 mm-thick mild steel with a cutting speed of 63 m/min at 5.9 kW.

    To construct an accurate, user-friendly system for designing complex, large-scale integratedoptical circuits, we have developed a new data format translator for connecting commerciallyavailable CAD tool packages and a controlling macro-program for efficient design using a languageon a UNIX workstation. The translator divides polygons expressed in the GDSII fileoutput from the layout editor into trapezoids for the segment file input to the simulator usingthe Beam Propagation Method. The controlling macro-program executes all CAD tools automaticallyand changes any parameters of the optical circuits. These two useful programs enableus to design complex large scale integrated optical circuits remarkably in a short time, andoptimize the circuits' parameters very easily.

    The author numerically analyzes frequency shifts of wavelength multiplexed pico-secondoptical solitons in a fiber, where collision length is shorter than spacing between inline amplifiers.We reveal that the shifts caused by two major mechanisms: initial overlap and power lossduring the collision, can be cancelled with each other by choosing a suitable initial time offsetbetween the channels. Eye diagram calculations simulating transmission system using 3 inlineamplifiers spaced every 40km predict that the appropriate time offset minimizes the pulsearrival timing jitter.
