    To form thin films of organic functional polymers, we proposed a modified technique of pulsed laser deposition (PLD), photosensitized PLD. The feature of the technique is that ablation is brought about by excitation not of target materials themselves but of a small amount of photosensitizer doped in the polymer targets. Because of the efficient photosensitized thermal reaction, we can induce ablation at longer laser wavelength and lower fluence. Thus photochemical decomposition is avoided in the PLD process. By employing the technique, we succeeded in the deposition of thin films of various polymers. In this report, we focused our attention onto PTFE that has high potential of application in industrial electronics. Choosing graphite as a photosensitizer, we succeeded in the deposition of PTFE with a near-infrared (1064 nm) Nd3+: YAG laser of giant-pulse-type (80 μs), which is a versatile, economical, and widely spread light source in industry.

    Excimer laser ablation (ELA) of 3, 4, 9, 10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) targets enables us to obtain organic thin films with various electronic/electric properties with minute control by changing the ablation conditions. In particular, polyperinaphthelenic organic semiconductor (PPNOS) thin films are prepared by ELA of PTCDA with XeCl excimer laser beams. Enhancement of elimination reaction of side groups of PTCDA is observed by ELA of mixted targets of PTCDA with Co powder. Heterojunctions between the PPNOS films and n-Si wafers are formed and show obvious rectifier properties. I-V curves of the junction in the dark and under illumination show the possibility for the junction to be used as a photovoltaic cell. Furthermore, doping of PPNOS films with Li ions is carried out. The 950 mAh/g maximum capacitance at the first cycle, which is much higher than that of conventional graphite anodes indicates that the films are useful for anode electrodes for ultra thin rechargeable Li ion batteries.

    The energy coupling rate during welding of Al-Mg-Si alloys with a CO2 laser and a Nd:YAG laser was measured calorimetrically. The coupling rate obtained with the Nd:YAG laser was higher than that with the CO2 laser for both heat conduction welding and keyhole welding. The coupling rate for CO2 laser welding changed steeply at the transition from a heat conduction welding state to a keyhole welding state. Coupling rates under the keyhole welding state match the Gouffe-Dausinger model that determines the coupling rate based on the weld depth and focal spot size. This model includes a constant figure that is dependent on laser beam absorptivity to molten metals and plasma in the keyhole. It is thought that the coupling rate in the heat conduction state depends on the absorptivity of the laser beam to molten metals. Absorptivity to plasma in the keyhole also affects the coupling rate in the keyhole welding state.

    We demonstrated a mid-IR optical NO2 monitor based on a frequency-stabilized, Yb-fiber laser pumped difference frequency generation (DFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. A high power Yb-fiber laser with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode were used as DFG pump and signal sources, respectively. The spectral characteristics of NO2 were evaluated using a multipass absorption cell with an optical path length of 10 m. Continuous absorption spectra of NO2 from 2886.5 cm-1 (3.464 μm) to 2896.5 cm-1 (3.452 μm) were demonstrated over 10 cm-1 with a spectral resolution of approximately 60 MHz. We also demonstrate reproducibility and stability of NO2 detection system with the mid-IR light sources were investigated, in addition to long-term monitoring of NO2 concentrations over a three-day period.

    This paper discusses spectroscopic data of Gd for laser isotope separation (isotope shifts, hyperfine structures and lifetimes) for 560-600 nm wavelength transitions. The possibility of selective excitation of 157Gd, using 533 cm-1→17974 cm-1, was discussed. Based on the polarization selection rules, selective photoionization of 155Gd and 157Gd was demonstrated. External magnetic field effect on isotopic selectivity was investigated experimentally and numerically. They verified that a magnetic field of 2 Gauss, for lsers with 50 ns durations, would completely destroy the selectivity.
