JOURNAL FREE ACCESSMeasurements have been made on the charge states of ions produced by the electron capture decay of 109Cd(453d). The apparatus employed was a pulse-counting mode magnetic spectrometer, consisting an ion source chamber, an analyzer tube, a detector and 3-channel pumping systems. The radionuclide, 109Cd, produced by the nuclear reaction, 109Ag(d, 2n) 109Cd, was isolated without an isotopic carrier by the solvent extraction procedure developed by M. Inarida. A HCl solution of carrier-free 109Cd was dropped on the stainless steel meshes, which was later mounted to the ion source chamber. The ions produced by the electron capture decay of 109Cd on the solid surface were pulled out, analyzed by the magnetic field, and counted by a 16-stage Cu-Be electron multiplier. 109Cd decays to first excited state of 109Ag, which has a half life of 40 sec. Emitting 87.7 keV gamma rays, the state deexcites to the ground state of 109Ag. The gamma transition has an internal conversion coefficient larger than unity. The charge spectrum of the ions produced by the decay has shown that the most abundant species is singly-charged ions.View full abstractDownload PDF (562K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe effects of the repeller voltage and shield voltage on the ionization potential and appearance potential measurements using a CEC21-103C mass spectrometer have been investigated. Taking the effects into consideration, the ionization potentials and appearance potentials of various ions from some halogenotoluenes were measured. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe concentration effect of the reactant gases, Ne, N2, Ar and Kr, admixed with the helium gas is studied in the injected-ion drift tube by comparing the mass spectra of the reservoir gas and of the gas sampled directly from the drift tube. It is found that the flow through the aperture of the drift tube, which has a diameter of 0.7 mm ∅, is “medium flow” in the present experimental pressure range(from 0.2 to 1.4 Torr), and that the concentration ratios vary with the pressure in the drift tube. The concentration ratios measured at 0.6 Torr which is most frequently used are 1.8, 2.15, 2.32 and 3.0 for the case of Ne, N2, Ar and Kr, respectively. These results are compared with the theory of the two component gas flow through an aperture. The correction of reaction cross sections previously measured by the injected-ion drift tube technique is described. The correction factor for the charge transfer cross section 22Ne++ 20Ne → 22Ne + 20Ne+ is found to be 0.89, and more satisfactory agreement with theory is obtained.View full abstractDownload PDF (744K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAn attempt to apply computerized pattern recognition method to analyze low resolution mass spectra has been discussed. The mass spectra of organic compounds ranging C6-C15, O2-O6, and index of hydrogen deficiency 4-6, were converted into the logical(1, 0)patterns which were classified into several clusters based on their similarities. The results of classification were utilized for the prediction of partial structures of the tested compounds from their low resolution mass spectra. The computation was carried out along the program prepared based on this clustered results, then the correct answers were responded for 85 % of 238 tested compounds.View full abstractDownload PDF (1154K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe pattern coefficient of hydrogen selenide(H2Se)was measured by means of a quadrupole mass spectrometer in the pressure range from 10-8 to 10-6 Torr. The ratio of H2Se+:HSe+:Se+ has been found to be 100:37.0:89.1.
