Enoshima, located in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, is one of the most famous tourist attractions, and the Samuel Cocking Botanical Garden Greenhouse Remains is located there. As the name suggests, this greenhouse was built by Cocking, who is famous for his achievements. However, it is not well known that his achievements were not limited to the creation of the botanical garden, but also led to the founding of companies and schools related to photography and printing in Japan. Konishi College of Photography(now Tokyo Polytechnic University)is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and the Enoshima International Art Festival 2023, which was held for 1.5 months in the spring at the Cocking Garden on Enoshima Island, featured an exhibition and presentation entitled The Deep Relationship between Samuel Cocking and Rokuemon Sugiura and The Roots of Photography and Printing in Japan. The exhibi- tion and description titled The Roots of Photography and Printing in Japan will be introduced.

In the developing process of nuclear emulsion films, silver atoms are often generated on the film surface and silver grains irrelevant to the tracks are adhered on there. They obscure the tracks composed of silver grains. We have de- veloped a method for removing these surface silver grains by exposing them with hydrophobic iodine vapor to make to silver iodide and fixing them. The silver grains on the surface were altered to silver iodide by this treatment, but the iodine vapor could not penetrate into the hydrophilic emulsion layer and the developed silver grains on the track were left as they were. Only the grains at the terminal of the track that appeared on the surface were altered to sil- ver iodide. These silver iodide grains were removed by fixing treatment. Chemical removal of the surface silver grains on nuclear emulsion films was demonstrated to improve the efficiency of track detection.
