1. A purified colorless fraction from liver, vitamin B
15 concentrate, has been prepared by repeating a procedure of the adsorption on activated charcoal followed with elution with an aqueous dilute alkaline solution. An evidence has been presented of the effective removal of vitamin B
12 and folic acid in the preparation of vitamin B
15 concentrate.
2. Under the experimental condition reported above, the addition of vitamin B
15 concentrate to all-vegetable ration resulted in a significant stimulation of chick growth. An increase in feed efficiency has always been found in supplemented group compared with unsupplemented control.
The study was supported in part by grants from Research Fund of the Ministry of Education, and from the Yoshitomi Pharmaceutical Co. Thanks are due to Dr. P. Handler of Duke University, N.C., U.S.A., for the generous gift of crystalline B
12.
