At any temperature tested, developmentel rate was higher in Bursaphelenchus lignicolus, a causal agent of pine wilting disease, than in B. mucronatus having no pathogenicity to pine trees, at both embryonic and post embryonic stages when reared on Botrytis cinerea fungi. No significant difference was observed between the ratios of males in adult populations of these two Bursaphelenchus species at moderate temperatures. The population growth rate of B. lignicolus was higher at all temperatures tested than that of B. mucronatus, while the saturation density was higher in the latter than in the former. The higher reproductive rate in B. lignicolus than in B. mucronatus might be attributed partly to the higher developmental rate.

Several indole compounds were detected in the excreta of bugs, Lygus disponsi LINNAVUORI, fed with rape flower bud. The Rf values on thin layer chromatogram were 0.02, 0.13, 0.18, 0.25 and 0.30 in the solvent system butanol-ethanol-water (76 : 19 : 5). These were in general accord with those of the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) metabolites in excreta of bugs fed with IAA. Significantly high auxin activiry was detected in the crude excreta of the bugs fed with various host plants, but not in the fractions of the excreta fractionated by thin layer chromatography. IAA in high concentration inhibited the feeding of the bugs, whereas IAA in suitable concentration had a tendency to simulate it in the presence of sucrose. The significance of indole auxin metabolism in the nature is discussed.

Sensitivity of isolated intracellular symbiotic microorganisms of Laodelphax striatellus FALLEN, Ls-1 and Ls-2, to high temperature and antibiotics was studied. Ls-1 completely lost its viability when stored at 37°C, while Ls-2 was able to survive. Ls-2 was killed by the addition of 2.4 μg/ml of cycloheximide at 37°C.

The cytotoxic response of Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxin with swelling like a balloon and bursting seemed to be universal on the cells taken from insects in virto, while cells developed from mammalian origin showed no morphological changes even at the ultrastructural level. δ-Endotoxin may not have other effects on mammalian cells, such as growth-inhibition of Yoshida ascites sarcoma cells and release-stimulation of UV-absorbing substances from mouse sarcoma 180 ascites cells into the medium.

"Copulatory attempt", the final step of male precopulatory behavior, was observed and analysed by using various female models. Female sex pheromone was an absolutely essential releaser for the short range mating behavior of male moths even after the initial contact with a female moth. Visual stimuli, if any, was suggested to be less important than olfactory and tactile stimuli for male moths. Male copulatory attempt was found to be released by the combination of three different stimuli. The first stimulus is a species specific female sex pheromone, which must be emitted from a pinpoint source. The second stimulus is moth scales on the surface of a three dimensional substrate. It is not species specific and appears to be a tactile stimulus. The third stimulus is the size of the substrate on which the sex pheromone and moth scales are appropriately situated. Size seemed to be recognized by the distance from the pinopoint of pheromone source on the model and by antennal contact with the substrate.

Testicular development and spermatogenesis were studied in Papilio xuthus larvae and pupae of both diapause and non-diapause types. The prompt differentiation of the sex cells was observed during fourth and fifth (final) instar larvae, and eupyrene sperm bundles were first observed on the first day of the fifth instar in both types. In the diapause type, the spherical spermatids began to degenerate at this stage, and on the fourth day of the fifth instar the spermatogenesis stopped completely, and degeneration occurred in all the spermatidal cysts and sperm bundles at pupal stage. In the non-diapause type, however, spermatogenesis proceeded on throughout fifth instar, and apyrene sperm bundles appeared in pupae.

N. cinerea males raise their wings and tegmina at the recognition of mature females by contact chemoreception through their antennae. The chemical factors responsible for male wing-raising are presented mainly in the hydrocarbon fraction of the cuticular wax. Chemical composition of the hydrocarbon was analyzed and found to be a mixture of normal alkanes and methylbranched alkanes. The hydrocarbon fraction from male and female cuticular wax were identical in chemical composition and the wing-raising activity.

Field ezperiments showed that 1 : 99 to 10 : 90 mixture of (Z)-5-decenyl acetate and (Z)-7-decenyl acetate was the most suitable combination as a lure to catch the male common cutworm moth, Agrotis fucosa BUTLER, at 0.17 to 0.5 mg per rubber septum. The traps baited with the 10 : 90 mixture at 0.5 mg/septum (standard lure) caught 2.5 to 4.6 times more males than the virgin female traps (five 4 to 5-day-old females) for about 1 month. This formulation is considered to be useful as a lure for monitoring population in the field. Maximum attractant activity of the mixture at natural ratio (68 : 32) was obtained at 0.0016 to 0.0075 mg/septum, but it was 42 to 95% of that of the standard lure. With (Z)-5-decenyl acetate by itself, the maximum catches were obtained at 0.005 mg/septum, but they were 54% of those with the standard lure. (Z)-7-Decenyl acetate attracted no male moth at any amount levels by itself. On the contrary, the attractive effect of (Z)-5-decenyl acetate at 0.005 mg/septum was significantly increased with the addition of (Z)-decenyl acetate at 0.05 to 0.5 mg/septum. This is the first instance of the synthetic admixture of two component sex pheromone giving the maximum attraction at a ratio (1 : 99-10 : 90) quite different from the natural ratio (68 : 32).
