JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe temperatures on the surface and inside the rubber roll have been measured under cyclic loading. The effect of the increase in temperature in rubber rolls on the fatigue life has been discussed. It is confirmed that both the maximum temperatures obtained by calculation and measurement in the rubber layer, reached to about 210°C. It is well known that the temperature was on and over the thermal limit of rubber material. From these results, it was concluded the crack initiation in the rubber roll mainly depended on heat degradation phenomena of rubber material by cyclic loading.View full abstractDownload PDF (637K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSBlooming of stearamide (SA) in NBR vulcanizates was investigated for factors such as a bloom weight, nitrile content (AN%) of NBR, the solubility of SA in NBR, relation between the solubility parameters of NBR and SA, and DSC measurement of SA in NBR. The bloom weight decreased with the AN% from 0% to near 29% and the solubility of SA in NBR also increased. In NBR exceeding 29AN%, bloom weight decreased gradually although the solubility decreased. The similar result was obtained in the relation between bloom weight and difference in the solubility parameters of SA and NBR. This shows that either of the two blooming mechanisms is operating in the blooming of SA in NBR. In NBR with low AN%, supersaturation mechanism will explain the blooming of SA well and in NBR with high AN%, energy slope mechanism may be applied for the blooming of SA.View full abstractDownload PDF (668K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe structure and content of carbon gel in carbon black filled rubber composites were studied as functions of molecular weight and chemical structure of rubber by the pulsed NMR technique. The content of carbon gel was governed by the molecular weight of rubber but was controlled by the viscosity of rubber solutions which were used for the blend and the chemical structure of rubber. The increase of carbon gel content in the composites was mainly from the increase of highly mobile rubber phase, and the gel became soft with the development of this phase. On the other hand, the content and structure of glassy rubber phase were not affected by the size of the carbon gel and chemical structure of rubber, and they showed almost constant value despite the large change in the carbon gel content. The formation mechanism of carbon gel in carbon black filled rubber systems was discussed in connection with the results.View full abstractDownload PDF (760K) -
