Friction-induced vibrations and frictional noises generated on sliding surfaces cause a sense of uneasiness and discomfort among users and they significantly reduce the product value of the entire mechanical system. In recent years, there have been many cases where small noises that have been ignored (or tolerated) in the past have become problematic because of the reduction in environmental noise, as in the case of electric vehicles that have become quieter due to the elimination of engine noise, for example. Combined with the increasing demands of users for quietness, the problem of friction and vibration has become a more important technical issue than ever before. Therefore, in this paper, the mechanism of friction induced vibration is explained in detail, followed by an explanation of how the frictional properties of rubber materials are related to the generation of friction induced vibration.
