It has been found that when the edge transitions of the steps of staircase patterns were emphasized by means of a waveform which was similar to that of a second derivative waveform, brightness could be perceived more uniformly and as if the Mach phenomenon had been suppressed.
This report describes the results of quantitative measurements and considerations of the differences in brightness, that occur in the appearance of a staircase waveform pattern when the contour is, or is not, emphasized. Its effect to the picture quality is also discussed.
