In order to determine if is possible to produce a flat high-definition TV receiver, driving method making use of internal memory obtained by repetitive pulse discharg is developed and applied to an eight-inch gas-discharge display panel with 160×1 cells. As a result, (1) stable memory operation is obtained with a voltage marg almost the same as that of previously fabricated small panels; (2) the panel is able operate stably at an addressing speed so fast that 1, 000 line-TV pictures can be rep_??_ duced on the it. Moreover, color TV pictures with 256 gray levels, a peak area lun nance of 40 fL and a luminous efficacy of 0.34 lm/W are displayed on the panel. T present study shows that a high-definition TV display with the necessary luminan memory margin and addressing speed characteristics is possible.
