We have developed a 56 cm wide color data display tube. The tube has a resolution of 2 M pixels and a display area 11% larger than the convetional 4 : 3 format 51 cm color data display tube.

High resolution and brightness are required for CRT display monitors. A ferro-magnetic metal chassis is generally used as an external magnetic shield against fields. To obtain the shielding effect, the inner magnetic shield (IMS) is demagnetized by an auto-degauss coil (ADG coil). The influences of steel chassis and ADG coils are studied using magnetic field analysis. A new chassis and auto-degauss coil for a CRT display monitor have been developed using computer-aided design. The mislanding by the geomagnetic field is reduced.

A simulation code to calculate beam trajectories and aberration coefficients of electron beams including both electric lenes and magnetic deflection fields has been developed. The program can calculate effects of misconvergence on the thin ferro-magnetic plate, deflection sensitivity, eddy current loss of windings, and leakage flux of the deflection yoke. This paper describes the analytical method used in the program and the simulated results concerning the deflection. The simulated results agreed well with our experiments. We have demonstrated that the developed program is effective for numerically designing a deflection yoke.

This report introduces a theoretically strict process for designing correction lenses. The surface design requires the integration of the equations which express the surface gradient. However, these'gradient' equations are generally not compatible with each other. In stripe tubes, mislanding along the screen stripes ('allowable mislanding') fortunately does not affect picture quality. Therefore, by controlling the allowable mislanding appropriately, we can make the above gradient equations compatible. The problem is fixing the distribution of this allowable mislanding. To derive an equation for determining the distribution I employed basic theorems in geometrical optics directly. Next, I applied the obtained result experimentally to the process of integrating the gradient equations and proved that compatibility had been achieved.

Electroluminescent (EL) flat-panel displays are high quality, but have the disadvantage that the display colors are limited ; so far, only monochromatic (orange-yellow) EL displays have been put to practical use. This study proposes a method that stably produces SrS : Ce EL phosphor with the CIE color coordinates of (x, y) = (0.18, 0.35). An optimal Ce concentration of 0.1-0.2 at. % and an annealing treatment temperature of around 500°C were found to be the key to ensuring that the SrS : Ce phosphor had a good blue purity. Using the unfiltered blue-green SrS : Ce phosphor thus obtained, we constructed a 1.8-inch-diagonal RGB 8-color EL display with a stacked panel configuration, which is composed of a lower panel of a patterned ZnS : Mn-ZnS : Tb phosphor and an upper one of the SrS : Ce phosphor. Since its structure allows a large fill factor for each color to be obtained and hence is advantageous for enhancing areal luminance, this display panel is expected to be fairly bright, provided that the performance of the phosphors can be raised.

A technique for apparently doubling the number of pixels of a TFT-LCD panel is proposed. A wobbling technique utilizes the rotation of the polarized planes of light irradiated from TFT-LCD by a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) device to shift pixels. The FLC wobbling device combined with a projector which uses a single TFT-LCD panel has doubled the vertical resolution from 240 to 480 lines. When a projector which uses 3 TFT-LCD panels with 480 horizontal lines was used, a vertical resolution of 800 to 1000 lines was achieved and the depixelization effect, which eliminates the pixel images on the screen resulting in a smooth CRT-like picture, was also confirmed. To overcome the problem of the narrow operating and storing temperature range as well as of low reliablility, we have developed a FLC mixture. This mixture has a smectic C* temperature range from -33 to 86°C and it has passed tests, including mechanical shocks at 100 m/s
2 level and continuous driving at 75°C for more than 1000 hours, thus confirming its high reliability.

An advanced multi-field-driving method that reduces not only the dynamic power consumption, but also the static power consumption of LCD driving circuits has been developed. The applicability of this method was confirmed by using a 9.5″ VGA TFT-LCD. Total driving circuit power consumption was reduced to less than half that of a conventional 60 Hz driving method for all displayed images. In addition, the displayed images obtained were sufficient for practical use and had no visible image degradation, such as flicker and crosstalk.

To realize 3D displays that do not cause fatigue, a binocular display with accommodative compensation is proposed. The depth of an experimental display is controlled by the Z-buffer value of the center pixel of a CG image. The virtual display image is moved by back-and-forth movements of relay lens. Using this display, the sensation of image sharpness and ease of stereoscopic fusion are improved.

A method is described for estimating the colors of object surfaces when the measured image contains highlight and interreflection effects. I suppose that when multiple objects of inhomogeneous dielectric materials such as plastics are placed close together, the observed color vectors from the object surfaces are expressed in a linear combination of the illumination color and the object colors. First, we estimate the illumination color from highlight areas in the measured image. Next, I estimate the chromaticity of the object color inherent in each surface from the chromaticity distribution of the measured image. I define a chromaticity plane on which the chromaticity coordinates of any observed colors are represented as a relative coordinate system on the basis of, the illumination color. The problem of estimating object color is then reduced to finding the vertices of a polygon. Finally, I demonstrate the feasibility of the method in an experiment, where the object color image without highlight and interreflection is recovered.

Finding realistic arm postures for synthetic actors is a complex and important problem in the field of human motion research. But an achievable method for creating them has not yet been proposed. The problem of creating realistic arm posture can be solved in two main steps using the presented algorithm. First, hand posture is created based on a database which is formed using an octree data structure. Classifying the reachable space and forming a database seriously simplifies the creation of hand posture. Second, the posture of the rest of the arm is determined by using iso-comfort regions; a concept introduced by the authors. Obtained results prove the effectiveness of
iso-comfort regions from the standpoint of realism.
