High definition television (HDTV) can produce a sensation of reality greater than conventional television because of its high resolution and large screen. An HDTV sound system should also be specifically designed to maximize the potential of HDTV.
Psychological experiments are conducted with seven sound reproduction systems to assess the sensation of reality and other qualities. The results indicate that a four sound-signal system, with three sound signals in front of the observers and one sound signal at the rear of observers, is desirable for the HDTV sound system. With this system, a greater sensation of reality can be produced and the direction of sound image is as close as possible to that of the corresponding picture on the screen for various viewing positions. This system is compatible with movie sound reproduction systems.
