Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been synthesized on catalyst supports such as commercially available zeolites and in-house mesoporous silica at temperature above 800℃ by the Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) method. It is found that some SWNTs in the pristine soot have a diameter distribution nearly equivalent to the surface pore size of the each catalyst supports.

Hollow tubes, so-called micropipes (MPs), were successfully transformed into the filled pipes by utilizing self-healing phenomenon. We have also shown that the self-healing phenomenon of MPs via annealing at high temperature is related to the dissociation of "super" screw dislocation into multiple unit screw dislocations with the induced stacking faults, edge dislocations and residual strains.

The carbon micro-coils obtained by chemical vapor deposition have an amorphous structure, and they are graphitized by heat treatment. The temperature dependence of the electric resistance and magnetoresistance for both the as-grown carbon micro-coil and those anuealed at various temperatures up to 3000℃ were measured.

Carbon microcoils/nanocoils were prepared by catalyiic pyrolysis of acetylene using the ceramic powder-supported metal catalysts, and the preparation conditions, morphology, microstructure and some properties were examined. The most effective catalyst for obtaining carbon nanocoils with high coil yield was Ni(NO_3)_2.

Carbon nanocoils with a coil diameter of 50-450 nm were prepared by the catalyiic pyrolysis of acetylene using sputtered metal thin films such as Au, Ni, Au/Ni, Pt/Pd, etc. The preparation conditions, morphology and some properties of the carbon nanocoils were examined. The growth of two kinds of carbon nanocoils with different microstructures were observed.

Structures of Ge clusters covered with carbon have been studied by high resolution electron microscopy. The Ge clusters of diamond structure have been produced in carbon particles. Twin or Pentagonal decahedron of germanium with the size of 10nm was produced. The growth process of Ge clusters from the Ge-C mixture film at 500℃ is also shown.

By heating of the silicon core-carbon mantle particles produced by ACCM (Advanced Carbon Coating Method), formation process of α-SiC particles by the solid reaction between carbon and silicon have been observed by the use of electron microscopic heating stage. α-SiC particles were produced at 500℃. The diffusion of silicon into carbon mantle and carbon into silicon crystal has been observed. Two processes on the formation of silicon carbide are discussed as the size effect of silicon particles.

A method to coat the surface of samples by an amorphous carbon layer was developed. The method was named the ACCM (Advanced Carbon Coat Method). A copper oxide whisker and it coated by an amorphous carbon tube were reduced by heating in a transmission electron microscope. The reduced copper oxide whisker was absorbed into copper grid on the root of the whiskers. Then the amorphous carbon tube was remained.

ZnO fine particles were coated with SiO_2 layer with the thickness of 5 nm order. Dynamic behavior of amorphous SiO_2 layer at the level of atomic scale at high temperature was observed by electrically heating SiO_2-coated ZnO particles on W filament in the transmission electron microscope. Amorphous SiO_2 layer crystallized at 500℃ to SiO_2 crystallites with the size of 5 nm order and the formation of Zn_2SiO_4 occurred by the reaction of SiO_2 and ZnO above 800℃.

Mn ultrafine particles prepared by gas evaporation method consist of mainly α-Mn particles and p-Mn particles, which have the habits of tristetrahedron and rhombic dodecahedron. But the structure of the rod shaped Mn ultrafine particles was unknown. The structure and morphology of this particle have been elucidated on the basis of selected area electron diffraction. The planer defects along to <110> direction have been included predominately for the rod shaped particle.

Spontaneous copper selenide formation was studied by the use of Cu particles which were partly deposited Se amorphous films. The selenide crystals were formed in both selenium films and Cu particles. If the surface of Cu particles were covered with Cu2O thin layer, the direction of Se atoms was changed by the Cu particle size. In large size (130nm), selenide was formed in both Cu particle and Se film. In small size (40nm), selenide was formed in Cu particle by the diffusion of Se atoms passed through the Cu2O layer.

Metal ultrafine particles produced by gas evaporation method were covered with oxide layer of thickness less than 10 nm by exposed to air. In order to make clear the relations of structure, thickness and IRspectra, the surface oxide layer on various metal particles were analyzed by HREM, IR spectra and EDX.

We developed 1-2 nanometer ultrathin amorphous silica film for improving stability and reducing unreacted raw materials of typical Red 202 pigment. Reduction of impurities on the surface of silica coated Red pigment was established by using medium pressure in He plasma.
