Tribology plays an important role in the smooth operation of mechanical systems. Recent years, in the efforts toward SDGs, great expectations are placed on the performance improvement of lubricating oil as an effective means for improving the energy efficiency and reducing the environmental load of mechanical systems. Lubricating oil consists of base oil and additives. The base oil is mainly responsible for viscosity characteristics, and the additives are responsible for interaction characteristics with the friction surface. This paper outlines the role and main composition of lubricating oil from the viewpoint of lubrication mechanism.

Lubricant is a very important component of machine which contributes to their stable operations. Its basic performance mostly depends on the base oil that composes 80 to 90% of the Lubricant itself. In addition to above mentioned, there are many kinds of base oil and we have to choose the most appropriate one for operating environment of Lubricant. On the other hand, there is a growing need for high-performance Lubricant corresponding to the enhancement of laws and regulations all over the world. In this review, we summarize the property and application of base oil, in particular, the mineral, synthetic and vegetable types. Furthermore, we introduce an example of the countermeasures and its results for the Fire Defense Law compliance, in consideration of the change of the Lubricant to high flash point type.

While automotive companies are eager to develop electric vehicle, many studies of fuel economy improvement by internal combustion engine are still going on now. Development of fuel economy engine oil is among them. To apply low viscosity base oil for engine oil contributes to reduce viscous resistance and then improves fuel economy. In that case, fuel economy performance can be enhanced by using proper friction modifier. In this paper, Molybdenum Dialkyldithiocarbamate which is widely used for friction modifier in fuel economy engine oil is introduced.

Outline of the cutting lubricants and the press working lubricants was described, and a lubrication mechanism of the cutting lubricants and the press working lubricants was explained on this paper. As for the cutting lubricants and the press working lubricants, the extreme pressure agent without chlorine was developed for an improvement of the working environment. In the press working lubricants, it was found that taking a sulfide type extreme pressure agent with a metal type detergent showed same level performance as chlorine type extreme pressure agents. However, it is thought that the regulation of chemical ingredient becomes more severe in the future. In recently, polymer type agent which consists of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen was developed. In this paper, press working properties of this polymer was expounded. Meanwhile, in development of the press working lubricants, the simulator which can evaluate processing properties of lubricants is necessary for a laboratory level. Therefore, the tester which was developed for adhesion simulation of drawing and ironing process was evaluated in this paper.
