    Since 1995, we have been taking part in “Yume Kagaku-21” sponsored by the Chemical Society of Japan, the Japan Chemical Industry Association and so on.
    This event is aimed at pupils so as to arouse their interest in ‘Chemistry’, and it takes place during their summer vacation.
    The events include a lot of chemical experiment show closely planned by ten or more chemical companies.
    We have demonstrated several experiments related to the chemistry of silver halide photography and they had a good reputation. Especially, the experiment of ‘Color Development’ used a photographic material having ultra low sensitivity in which an exposure and a development can achieve without the use of a dark room has been very popular among pupils. We will continue such activities in order to make silver halide photography more familiar and prevalent.

    Cooperation with a regional community providing places to educate for children has been important to cultivate children's ability to live to be their own, because children have had comfortable life to learn since the five-day week system of public schools was enforced. Konica Minolta Inc. lectured on basic photographic technology, as communication with a regional community, on the science course of Hino Citizen University sponsored by the board of education of Hino-City. In this review, we report details of the lecture, target of education, reactions of children, and comments of the board of education.

    In the exhibition on “Interesting high polymers (Aug. 10-25, 2002, at the National Science Museum)” that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan, we displayed high polymer-gelatin as a binder of photographic films. The demonstrations are of basic feature and sol/gel transitions of gelatin, the most important feature for the photographic film manufacture. Most of the visitors are school students in the summer vacation and they enjoyed the mysterious features of high polymers.

    Thanks to the improvement of Cooled CCD cameras and Digital Cameras, we can easily take astronomical photographs that could not be taken with film cameras. In this paper, I introduce the benefits of Digital Imaging in Astronomical Photography by showing examples.

    We developed digital planetarium “Super-MEDIAGLOBE” using a single lens projection system with a super high definition QXGA (2048 × 1536) projector and a 160 degree fisheye lens for precise image projection onto a dome screen. In addition to constructing 3D models of celestial bodies such as fixed stars and planets, we implemented a 3D planetarium function that enables space flight simulation in real time. The result was a compact, high-definition planetarium that totally absorbs its audience.

    Print on demand (POD) is a new computer-based printing method, for short runs, faster and more flexible than traditional printing methods. Due to the high cost of typesetting, printing company use digital files directly provided by the clients. This direct process is very difficult without common knowledge within printing company and clients. As the demand for has increased, especially manuals for industrial machinery accumulated in database are suitable.
    In POD, all data is completely digitally typeset and printed out on a paper output terminal device. Earlier technical problem has been solved, and is becoming more and more cost-effective. In addition, POD has become easier to use due to the spread of CTP Technology.
    POD will enable new products that were not possible with traditional offset printing, such as books printed on an as ordered basis and large-type books for visually impaired person. In time, POD will replace offset printing.

    POD System price and quality becomes practical level for commercial print, Print On Demand publishing market is activated. Conventionally we forecast POD will be substitution for offset printing, but recently POD will make a new market which is POD unique applications, for example Variable Data Printing and consumer service.     In this paper we surveyed the current status of book delivery system, and describe new on-demand publishing for circulating books using network system with on-demand printing system.     In the present age when great attention has been focused on environmental problems, I attempted to evaluate environmental impact by photographic services on the global environment using Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The LCA was carried out on both silver halide and digital imaging system in regard to global warming, resource consumption, and solid waste generation. The features and differences of these systems were clarified and the focus points for reducing environmental impact of these systems are discussed.

    PAGI method is to examine the photographic gelatin and published by the committee of Photographic and Gelatin Industries. PAGI is the combination of the initial of Photographic and Gelatin Industries. The 50th anniversary was reached in 2002, and the 9th edition of PAGI method (Japanese edition and English edition) was brought out in June, 2003. The committee is composed of gelatin manufacturers and gelatin users which are photographic industries. For half a century, PAGI has kept up examining to enroll new items and revise existing items. The unparalleled PAGI method has attracted attention of the persons concerned in photographic gelatin around the world. SPSTJ awarded the gelatin prize to PAGI in 1996. This is an introduction about PAGI method and the activities, and gives the outline of the latest edition (9th edition, 2002). PAGI 9th edition has consist 26 items of test methods.

    The effect of isoionic point of gelatin on the reactivity of hardener was investigated using the mixture of acid ossein gelatin (AOS) and limed ossein gelatin (BOS), and modified gelatin which are amidated (BOS-AM) and phthalated gelatin (AOS-PA). Mucochloric acid (MCA) and formaldehyde were used for hardener. The reactivity of hardener increased with rising of isoionic point of gelatin. It became clear that amid groups could not react with hardener. It seems that isoinic point dependence of reactivity of hardener was due to the difference in molecule structure. Sol fraction is related to the reactivity of hardener however low molecule content of the original gelatin has more influence on sol fraction.
