The results are illustrated diagramatically in Fig. 2. Even when isolated from the rest of the embryo, the presumptive ectoderm can produce cells of the M
1 species. However, this is not possible when its cells are dissociated, but when the cells are allowed to reaggregate it recovers its ability to produce M
1 species cells. The following conclusions are drawn from these results;
(1) The influence of other parts of the embryo is not necessary for differentiation of the M
1 cell species in the presumptive ectoderm.
(2) Association of blastomeres in the presumptive area of the ectoderm itself is a basic factor in differentiation of the M
1 cell species.
