This study deals with side cutting phenomena in micro-end-milling of hardened die steels using high speed air-turbine spindle. Cutting experiments were carried out with measuring cutting force, frank wear of tool and real depth of cut in one path in order to investigate on difference of cutting phenomena caused by cutting direction. Moreover, observing of machined surface, and measuring profile of cutting edge and machined surface were demonstrated. As a result, it was revealed that quality of the machined surface by up-cut milling was better than that by down-cut milling, because unstock-removal in up-cut was smaller and there was little tool abrasion in up-cut.

Development of a CNC lathe having a milling spindle has resulted in an improvement in the productivity of shafts that have a straight groove and a flat surface. However, for milling of shafts having a large length and a small diameter, workpiece deflection caused by the cutting force causes an increase in surface roughness of machined portion and chatter vibration. This study deals with an analysis of workpiece behavior and optimization of machining conditions with regards to milling of a shaft having a small flexural rigidity using ball end mills. In this paper, the workpiece deflection is analyzed based on calculated results of cutting forces obtained by using a cutting model proposed in previous papers. The predicted results are good agreement with the experimental results. Analysis of the resonance frequency of the workpiece is performed, and the relationship between the rotational speed of the spindle and displacement of the workpiece is clarified.

Geometric quantities such as undeformed chip thickness and area of cutting cross-section in milling with ball end mills having cutting edge of from one to six are compared in milling in which removal volume per unit time is constant. Cutting force in milling along the contour line of inclined surface with above ball end mills is calculated by using a cutting model and energy method proposed in previous papers. In order to clear the effect of number of cutting edge on tool behavior, the FEM models of ball end mill having cutting edge of from two to four are constituted by using geometric data of cross section of standard type end mill. In addition, deflection of cutting tool is analyzed by using cutting force data calculated and the FEM model. As the results, it is found that when number of cutting edge is four, changing of cutting force and tool deflection can be reduced considerably.

In milling with 5-axis machining center, the attitudes of tool or workpiece are controlled by tilting 2 axes, so the milling can be performed by outer portion of cutting edge having large cutting velocity. Cutting forces under various attitudes in pick-feed milling is predicted by using a cutting model and energy method proposed in previous papers. Displacement of the tool axis in a plane normal to the feed direction is analyzed by using the calculated result of cutting force and finite element model of the ball end mill, and machining error is calculated based on the tool deflection. The Machining error is obtained by considering relationship between cutting edge geometry and machined surface. It is shown that the machining error vary considerably with pickfeed direction of the tool and tool tilting angle.

The objective of this research is to model the machining error in elastomer endmilling. Because the elastomers have very low rigidity and huge elongation ability, workpiece deformation and irregular surface generation are considered as dominant factors of machining error. In this paper, in situ observation of workpiece deformations is investigated by high-speed camera. From the recorded images, workpiece deformations are calculated by using an image processing technique. Calculated workpiece deformations are compared with the machining errors. From the experimental results, workpiece deformations in up cut milling affect to the machining error. However, cutting force at surface generation is very small. These tendencies imply the effects of dynamic and viscoelastic behavior of workpiece.

In this paper, Cutting force, tool deflection, and machining error in flexible ball end milling of inclined surface under wide rotational speed were compared with the prediction of the two presented dynamic deflection model. As a result, rotational speed had a significant influence on machining error, and the regenerative force model considering the effect of tool deflection on uncut chip thickness showed a good agreement with the experimental data on all conditions. On the other hand, the rigid force model had insufficient accuracy at low rotational speed.

This paper describes influence of slider's electrode thickness on the performance of voltage-induction-type electrostatic motors. In the previous type of electrostatic motor, in which voltages are directly applied to both stator and slider electrodes, electrode thickness does not affect the motor performance, and thus its effect has not well studied. The thickness of slider electrodes, however, considerably affects the performance of induction motors. This report evaluates the effect of the electrode thickness through calculation of the slider′s internal capacitances using FEM analysis. The results indicate that thicker slider electrode decreases the output performance of the motor.

Eliminating the swash plate from a small helicopter can contribute to the weight reduction, the maintenance simplification and the cost reduction. Therefore, this paper proposes an electronically controlled swash plate mechanism using a sensorless motor for driving the main rotor. The sensorless motor is used as a sensor for acquiring the angle of the main rotor. Then, the main rotor angle is calculated from the acquired motor angle to drive the rotor blades. The paper, describes the swashplateless mechanism and the control method.

For the purpose of large reduction of the electricity consumption, a portable personal cooling system was developed, which cooled only the human body instead of a conventional air-conditioner which cooled the whole conventional room. Various methods including a cape model, a vest model were produced experimentally and were evaluated. Then, it was shown that a method to absorb heat with peltier device from a neck and to radiate heat by water cooling was most suitable. Moreover, a heat transfer model of water-cooling was built, and a design indicator for optimizing was shown.

In this paper, the modeling and simulation of micro-pin forming process using electrochemical machining (ECM) was discussed. The boundary conditions were chosen based on the parameters of ECM experiments. COMSOL Multiphysics was used to simulate the electric potential distribution on the pin surface and in the electrolyte, and the evolution of the micro-pin shape. The anode resistance was also taken into account to simulate the micro-pin forming process. The simulation results showed the same trend with experimental results in terms of the final pin shape and the diameter changing process.
