The author calculated the freezing degree days (<0°C) in Hokkaido by use of the normals of daily mean temperature. Then, he drew the isopleth of freezing degree days of every period, of ten days and of a year. As the normals are not satisfactory by themselves for the purpose of making various civil plans, he showed the fluctuation in the freezing degree days of every period of ten days and every year, their standard deviations, and the maximum and minimum at Sapporo, Obihiro, and Wakkanai in the last 30 years.

At Okutadami water power station we tried a measure to counter the accumulated snow on the outdoor E.H.V. electric apparatus by the experience of research and investment at Tagokura water power station located on the down stream of Okutadami site. However, owing to the difference of ambient temperature and quality of snow, the accumulated snow grew large like a mushroom on the electric apparatus, and freezed snow blocked the driving rod of line switches, so that the several damage such as mishap's to line switches and to shieldring of P.D and line switches occured.
The next winter, fitting up the driving mechanism with an electric heater and making the head of the shield cap round, we took the above apparatus on another test.
Oh the basis of the result we decided the capacity and setting position of the electric heater and the shape of the shield cap. We think this counter plan will have enough efficacy.
