The aim of this study is to clear up the actual state of library instruction in the junior high schools in Tokyo Metropolitan Area.
The survey was made in 1972 by the method of mailing questionnaires to 133 teachers in charge of school libraries.
The results of the survey are as follows:
1. 33 (39.8 per cent) of 83 schools which returned questionnnaires give library instruction to pupils.
2. In most schools (72.2 per cent) the teachers in charge of school library conduct library instruction at a new term.
3. 44 schools (53.0 per cent) have not given library instruction because of following reasons:
(1) It is hard for them to arrange hours for the instruction.
(2) No properly-qualified teacher.
(3) Deficient internal structure of the school for the instruction.
4. In conclusion the writers make following proposals which may promote some improvements on library instruction:
(1) Every school should appoint a full-time teacher-librarian.
(2) At the next revision of the course of study library instruction should be in a position definitely.
