In librarianship there exist three facets, type of library, material and problem, according to the 4th edition of Colon Classification. Associated with the history and description of libraries, two other categories, space and time, manifest themselves in this subject, too. It is obvious that the energy facet of the subject consists of three kinds of operations through which
    (1) energy is applied to the library materials : acquisition, cataloging, classification, mechanical preparation, etc.
    (2) energy (not necessarily physical) is transferred to readers: lending, assistance to readers, extension work, etc.
    (3) energy is accumulated within the library to make better services possible: administration, executive and finance, building, etc.
In UDC aad CC, isolate numbers are preceded by thier respective connective symbols as a dot or .a placed before the notation representing chronological divisions. The present writer attempts to use the first digit of isolate numbers as the facet indicator.
      1. Period
      2. Geographical area
      3. Administration. Executive
      4. Processing. Technical services
      5. Special material
      6. Services to readers. Library activities
      7. Type of library
      8. Class of clientele
Using colon just as the boundary mark between any two facets, we can, then, easily construct the classification symbol for such a compound subject as the ‘public library service to children through audio-visual materials’ for which our notation will be L 82: 73: 58. Alternative locations are provided under either L 73: 82: 58 or L 58: 82: 73.

Islamic names have very complicated characteristics and constructions closely relating to Mohammedanism and the language of the Koran. So, many books, dictionaries and library catalogs treat these name separately in various forms and spells. Moreover, these names are divided into four kinds: Personal name, Teknonymy, Patronymic and Byname, and many of them consist of the compound words.
How to treat these names in cataloging is very difficult problem for librarians.

In recent years, some catalogers appealed to the Japanese library technicians a reformation of cataloging practice—omission of heading for main entry from the unit card.
They except ‘Natural choice of heading’. Heading is only for filing merrit and description of book is immutable statement in the catalog. Then, they propose that main entry is entered under title, i.e. first item of description of book and may be added to heading, as they need to make author and other entries. Tittle main entry system seems to us more economical than traditional author main entry system, under the A. L. A. filing code 1942, not under the L. C. filing code 1956. This is truth, if we don't consider subject entry and consider author-title entry only.
They supply their theory, when make subject entries, under the same subject heading, the entries are field under the date of publication. And they account their successfulness, also, for the exclusion of hanging indention form of title entry.
The wtiter does'nt agree their reformation, why they have some misconceptions, or misinterpretations for main entry, heading, description of book, etc., as following.
     1. Omission of heading for main entry is equal making of title main entry system, though they don't believe so.
     2. Title main entry system is less economical in the cases of catalog system including official calalog and classified, or subject catalog. In these catalogs, we must select main entry. For instance, date of publication is no more identificial and rational than the main entry, under the same subject heading.
     3. Hanging indention form is no relation to the main entry system. We can make away of the form, under the traditional cataloging code, when we want.
Conclusion. —To the better cataloging practice, the writer points out that we must revised our cataloging code, NCR, without excluding main entry system.

Though subject departmentalization in public libraries has often been discussed the method has not been employed in Japanese libraries except the partial adoption in the National Diet Library. The Chiba Prefectural Library, however, started to work by providing subject reading rooms since April, 1957. In future, large public libraries may try to employ tye above mentioned method taking Chiba's as the test case. Paying attention to factors related, the writer tried to introduce the planning and practicing in the Library.

First, following the introduction of definitions of “information”, characteristics of information theory are reviewed with references to recording and communication. Shannon's theory is paid special attention as it is thought it sent a new idea into library science.
Secondly, library techniques to handle sources of information are discussed. The development of bibliographies is examined in detail since they have played a very important role, together with abstracting journals, to have access to information sources.
Thirdly, the relation between documentation and library science is observed by putting a facus upon Shera and Bradford. In the latter part, the duties of documentalists are considered in comparison with those of librarians.
In the fourth part, sources of information and information theory are taken as the object of study. The ever increasing sources can largely be controled by the adaptation of mechanical method. Gulls’ theory is discussed here fully.
As the conclusion, the writer suggests the followings to the Japanese library world: (1) Documentation technique has to be adapted cleverly to library science, (2) Documentation has to be extended to humanities, (3) Librarians have to keep themselves abreast with recent inventions, (4) Research method has to be developed, (5) It is necessary to encourage the communication of sources of information, (6) Training of staff is of special importance.

Among many factors involved in making the literature searching rational, indexes play a specially important role. Indexes available as library tools, however, are far from satisfaction. Even the indexes of particular abstracting journals show the lack of satisfactory coverage.
In this paper, the writer tries to pick up a certain number of articles and show how they are represented by subject-headings in subject indexes of three Japanese and two foreign abstracting journals. To make a comperative study, contents of each article are analysed and searched in the indexes afore mentioned to see under what subjects they are indexed.
The recognition of gaps shown in examples though very limited in number urges us to tackle the problem by means of thorough understanding of documentation technique.

This is a theme in lib. sciencs as practical science. In this paper I investigate, not “idea”, but “conditions” under which each administrative organization must finisn its purposes in each historical and social circumstances. At first, the univ. lib. is considered concretely as cooperative system; then we search the “organization” which is patterns of cooperative activities, functional and structural. And it implies 2 relationships, which are “formal org. vs. informal org.” and “adm. org. vs. operative. org.”. So we find the “significance of the adm. org.” that is the support of the formal org. In next paragraph, we treat the “objectives and functions of the adm. org. of the univ. lib.”, which is concluded from the “objectives of the univ.” and the “functions of the lib.”; that is, “dynamic and static bibliographic services for subject & descriptive approaches to lib. materials by faculties & student, etc.” In 3rd paragraph, the “structure of the adm. org. of the univ. lib.” is treated, and above all, the departmental adm. org. is criticized; and some typical org. schemes are pursued in dynamic relationships. Finally, though the adm. org. of each univ. lib. is conditioned by each univ. tradition, physical ecquipments, and lib. staffs etc.; anyone could not have a disregard for the leadership of the adm. or executive group. Foreign books 4,698,381v. 32%
But they have not a suitable cataloger's reference tools in their libraries to cataloging for European books. Their tools are very poor as table IV. The number of this table is one of the Aker's list on the appendix of Simple library cataloging, 4th ed.
One-third of their libraries have not such rule books as A. L. A. cataloging rule and others.
In our university libraries, it is necessary to have the cataloger's reference tools of the list C at least.

This report is based on the author’s own experiences with the children’s work in the New York Public Library.
The report briefly mentions the historical background of the New York Public Library and its wide and varied services. The NYPL’s unique organization is pointed out.
The children’s services in the NYPL is discussed in several aspects: development of the children’s work in the United States and in New York, organization and administration of the Office of Children’s Services, function and duties of the advisory specialists (Literature Specialist, Supervisor of Story-telling, and School Library Specialist), and training of children’s librarians, etc.
In his evaluation, the author pointed out different characteristics of libraries in the west and the east within the United States. Great contribution made by pioneer librarians and influences and leadership not only in the library work but also in the field of children’s literature by current outstanding librarians are highly praised.
At the end, the author analyses obstacles that delay the development of children’s work in public libraries in our country.
