The problem that librarianship is not considered as a profession has been frequently discussed and stated in the literature. Yet, there has been little knowledge of what librarians think about their profession. The purpose of this study is to find out librarians' attitude toward their own profession by sending out a questionnaire to university librarians working in Tokyo area. As a whole, regardless of their professional training difference, it can be summarized that they consider that librarianship is a profession which needs prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knolwedge.
