More than one thousand supervisors and administrators in university and college libraries were asked where they thought it would be desirable to acquire professional knowledge and skills. Based on a cross tabulation of 939 usable responses, three patterns of acquiring knowledge bases are found as follows. (1)independent, (2) complex I, (3) complex II.
Then, scatterplots of the rating on thirty-nine knowledge bases and perceptions of where they are better acquired were generated to identify the core curriculum for library science education. As a result, several knowledge bases should viewed by academic librarians as basic professional knowledge and skills learned through formal library education programs in universities and colleges, including descriptive cataloging, classification and subject cataloging, general reference sources, reference services, library legisrations and professional standards.
Final part of this paper provides a summary of analysis on how library supervisors and administrators appreciate library science education for the preparation of academic librarianship in terms of necessity of the professional certificate, preference in the hiring of junior staffs, and adequacy of the library science curriculum regulated by the Library Act.
Tentative conclusions and directions for further research and discussion are identified.

The cataloging unit defined in the four editions of NCR is examined. Both 1952 and 1965 editions of NCR refer to a work as a cataloging unit. However, neither editions clearly define when they deal with multi-works. NCR 1977 edition treats a physical unit of a work as the cataloging unit while the 1987 edition does tankousho (a work with a distinctive title) as the unit. They do not differ even when they deal with multi-works. The author proposes tankou bunken as a cataloging unit, which is, in an author's word, a bibliographical unit when a work is published as a single piece.

The author discusses the subject specialization in the education for library and information science, examining the actual programs in the case of music specialization in the United States and European countries.
In the United States, where the music specialization has relatively long history, following three types of programs exist :
① joint-degree programs in library and information science and music
② specialization courses in music librarianship
③ music librarianship as an elective
The author reports each type of programs and also reports the music specialization in the cases of German and the United Kingdom.
Finally, the author evaluates above mentioned type ① and type ③ programs as the training course of subject specialists. And concludes that type ①: joint-degree programs have lots of possibility for the subject specialization in the recent information society and the recent trend of the education for library and information science.
