The model of time-dependent distribution of books by their loan time has been seen as a useful tool for library management.,especially for book relegation. Quentin L. Burrell has proposed an excellent model of negative binomial distribution derived from a theory of stochastic process. However, the model does not fit the real observations. This paper shows it by using four-years circulation data of a Japanese university library, and tries to construct an alternative model by extending Burrell's model. The modified model incorporating a new idea obtained inductively from data proves to fit real observations well. The idea is to consider a parameter k of the negative binomial distribution as a time-dependent variable.

The purpose of this paper is to consider classification systems from structural point of view. First of all,we have to make a distinction between two kinds of categorization method of classification systems, one is categorized by their structures -hierarchical and multi-dimensional-,and the other is categorized by their expression style -enumerative and synthetic. Then, four leading classification systems,i.e.,Dewey Decimal Classification,Library of Congress Classification,Universal Decimal Classification, and Colon Classification, are located according to their structures. Special attention is given to the Dewey Decimal Classification. There are two interpretations of the structure of the DDC, one claims that DDC has complete hierarchical structure and the other claims that DDC partly introcluces multi-dimensional structure. This is also related to the matter of interpretation of the notation “0” one interpretes 0 as “generalities” and the other interpretes as “coorclination sign”.

As the result of 1980's educational reforms,it becomes main theme that all schools promote student's ability of self-education,where the correspondence to informationlization is important aspect. This paper studies promotion of information literacy in school library instruction from the viewpoint of self-education. From this study, the follwings were found.
The ability of self-education is consist of an ability of problem-solving,self-leaning and information literacy. School library instruction to keep up with informationalization must totally nurtures those abilities. In promotion of information literacy as self-education,it is important that we nurture an ability of managing media, informational processing, critical thinking of information, and it is effective that we use the Taikeihyo of Japan School Library Association (JSLA) to do so.
