In this paper, we want to discuss the strategy and scheme of developing biodiversity inventory for quantitative assessment of rural environmental changes. For this purpose, we reviewed some biodiversity inventories, such as Habitat Matrix in Canada, HNV farmland project of EEA, BDM in Switzerland, CIS & CS in UK, National Survey on the Natural Environment in Japan, “Tanbono-ikimono-chousa” in Japan, Rural Landscape Information System of NIAES in Japan, and so on. From these review, we found out needs to develop a new system which can integrate not only RDB species but also common species, species distribution, hierarchal ecosystem classification, habitat condition and land management.
