Some of Japanese traditional farmhouses (minka) have been renovated since 1970's and this architectural activity is called “ko-minka saisei” in Japanese. These renovations have 3 points in common as follows. The first is the compatibility of amenity of life and aesthetics of architectural style. The second is thorough repair works that include the dissolution of all architectural members and the relaying of groundwork. The last is relocating to remote places and reconstruction. It is to be hoped that these renovations will diffuse in farm villages although they are not familiar yet.

Farmhouses are not only a symbol of scenery that seems to be the countryside but also a foundation of life for the resident, and one of the system that supports resident's livelihood utilizing natural resources. An important feature of the farmhouses in the Tango peninsula is a roof thatched with Sasa dwarf bamboo. This culture formed the indigenous pattern of the satoyama landscape of the region. A structural timber of the farmhouse consisted of various tree species from the satoyama woodlands. The system of technique and culture relating the farmhouses includes some modern values such as education and character building.
