    Cross-linking structure of cross-linking polymers, especially for acrylate-type ultraviolet (UV)-cured resin, was characterized using specific decomposition methods. At first the cured resin sample was analyzed by pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC) in the presence of organic alkali, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). A series of methyl acrylate (MA) oligomers (up to hexamers) were observed in the pyrograms, which were formed through thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation selectively occurred at ester linkages in the UV-cured resin.
    Moreover, acrylate-type UV cured resins were also characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) combined with supercritical methanolysis of the samples. The MALDI mass spectrum of the methanolysis products contained a series of peaks related to MA oligomers up to around 50-mers, which cannot be observed by Py-GC in the presence of TMAH. Furthermore, the methanolysis products were fractionated by size exclusion chromatography followed by the MALDI-MS measurements of the individual fractions. The MALDI mass spectrum of the highest molar mass fraction showed a broad peak up to m/z ca. 180, 000. The observed distributions of the decomposition products suggested that the network junctions in the UV-cured resin were composed of up to around 2, 000 acrylate units.

    Polyrotaxanes consisting of cyclodextrins (CDs) as wheels and linear polymers such as poly (ethylene glycol) have been widely investigated by a number of research groups since their first discovery by Harada et al. Many attractive concepts and materials based on the unique structure of the polyrotaxanes formed by the end-capping of the pseudopolyrotaxane have been hitherto reported. This review summarizes the recent progress in synthesis of polyrotaxanes containing CD wheels, with emphasis on the synthesis by end-capping methods of pseudopolyrotaxane, along with a related few applications. Supramolecular-crosslinking between a CD host and a guest polymer is also briefly discussed.

  • 5. Assembly and Self-organization of Macromolecules with Hetero-phase Structures

    Morphological studies of well-defined polymers with heterophase structures including AB diblock copolymers, ABC triblock terpolymers, and 3-arm asymmetric ABC star-branched polymers are reviewed. Among them, ABC triblock terpolymers and asymmetric ABC star-branched polymers have been recently synthesized by means of living anionic polymerization. It has been well established as Molau's rule for a long time that the microphase-separated structures observed for AB diblock copolymers are successively changed from spherical, cylindrical, gyroid, to lamellar, depending on the composition f and combination parameter X N where X and N are the segment-segment interaction energy and the degree of polymerization, respectively. On the other hand, in ABC triblock terpolymers, there are additional several parameters (XAB, XAC, XBC, fA, fB, N) that can be varied by the sequential order (ABC, ACB, and BAC). Their morphologies are dependent on the relative magnitude of three segment-segment interaction parameters: a lamellar morphology that minimizes both interfacial contact energy and chain stretching with XAB=XBC<XAC, a core-shell cylindrical morphology that reduces the overall free energy with XAB<XBC<XAC, and a cylinder-at-the-wall and a sphere-at-the-wall that accommodate the most energetically favorable contact with XAB=XBC>>XAC. Moreover, 3-arm asymmetric ABC star-branched polymers potentially develop several super lattice structures including tricontinuous gyroid ones based on the arm length ratios and interaction parameters. Such characteristic morphologies are of particularly interest to produce novel and unique self-organized nano architectures potentially applicable to nano-devices.
