The fat energy ratio in the 2008 National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted as an annual survey is observed to have a temporary and singular decrease compared to the previous and subsequent years. The analysis of the daily purchase price of bananas in the household survey and the wholesale price of bananas in the Tokyo Metropolitan Wholesale Market Statistics shows that the “morning banana diet” that was popular during the November survey period affected this phenomenon. This is one of the cases that the statistical investigation was affected by an unexpected cause of the investigation environment.

Assuming that the decrease in lipid intake in the 2008 survey compared to the 2007 survey was due to the morning banana diet, the morning banana diet implementation rate by sex and age group was estimated, using the breakfast intake as a percentage of the daily lipid intake. Considering the diet method recommended by the advocators of the morning banana diet as a model, it was assumed that the morning banana diet implementers would have zero dietary fat intake at breakfast. Since the National Health and Nutrition Survey Report only shows the amount of nutrient intake per day, we used the research results by special estimation using individual results. Examining the results by banana intake by sex and age group, banana intake was too little in women aged 15-19 years, which suggests that some people did not eat bananas while reducing their lipid intake. The advocators of the morning banana diet recommended eating rice and candy without sticking to bananas, which suggests that they followed them. The rate of skipping breakfast also increased in males aged up to 50s, and in females aged 20s and 30s, which suggests an effect of banana diet boom.

As a case where the diet boom by TV coverage was quantitatively grasped by the nutrition survey, reanalysis using individual results by the research institute is expected. From the view pint of the Statisticians’ standards of conduct, the accountability of survey conductor is pointed out.

Margaret S. Archer’s morphogenic approach has shown that evolving morphogenesis in each of the structure, the culture, and the agency are interacting with each other to create new morphogenesis in society as a whole. The result of such morphogenesis, however, do not necessarily guarantee that a favorable social state will be realized. Sometimes, unfavorable and stagnating social situations could appear. But, as a result of such morphogenesis, a very favorable and problem-solving situation could be brought forth. This paper tries to identify such type of morphogenesis as social innovations. Such social innovations can resolve the problems and the contradictions existing in the current social systems, and thereby be able to enhance the system rationality, but at the same time bring about a richer and more meaningful life-world to the people. The cases of social changes brought forth by the introduction of the transportation IC cards, which are discussed in this paper, can be regarded as an example of such social innovations.
