Social and Economic Systems Studies: The Journal of the Japan Association for Social and Economic Systems Studies

The word "Chaos" was introduced in the mathematics in 1975 by Robert May. But, before this publication, there was pessimism for the future of science. For example, "The Coming of the Golden Age" by G. S. Stent emphasized difficulty which exist in science, mainly in physics. He called this difficulty by the name of "The second step of non determinism." Because, we already had experienced Newton's determinism and nextly the first stage of non determinism (Quantum mechanics.) But, now our natural science encountered new difficulty which is called "The second stage of non determinism." This difficulty had been found in social science long before this stage of natural science. That is the lack of suitable statistical method which describe Pareto Law in Economics. In this essay, we pointed out that some part of Stent's conclusion was based on the work of Mandelbrot. Now, Mandelbrot oriented to his Theory of Fractals. And also, just after the publication of Stent's book, the theory of Chaos had begun. And now, we, the people of science and social science, can confront with this difficulty basing new mathematical concept. At least, we arrived to discuss this problem altogether in the same frame work.

It is held generally that the theory of "life-world" is not compatible with system theory. This view shows that sociology fails to explain fully the interrelations of action and "Hand-lungszusammenhang" i. e. social order. As to Parsons, his theory is said to have remained aloof from the phenomenological concept "life-world". For example, according to J, Habermas, Parsons lacks any adequate concept equivalent to life-world, which is based on intersubjective communication. But is this true? In my opinion, Parsons' system theory does contain the conception of life-world. He cannot, however, integrate this conception with system theory. Recently, J. Habermas, in his attempt to conceptualize society as life-world, uses this concept as complementary to that of communicative action. Proceeding along this path, he comes to conceive of society as the synthesis of "social integration" and "system integration". In contrast, N, Luhmann asserts that life-world is adequately comprehended in terms of system theory. From this perspective, which is based on the paradigm change of system theory, he intends to grasp the interpenetration of individual and social system based on this change. I think that his basic conception concerning system makes possible a new approach to life-world.

Starting from historical sketch of econometrics as a discipline, we consider how and to what extent the econometric model is useful in economic analysis. Recently, economists in the rational expectation school offend the conventional econometric model ; instead, they recommend to utilize the time-series model such as the autoregressive and moving-average model. Reconsidering what is the model and what is meant by usefulness of economic analysis, we conclude that both of the large-scale econometric model and the time-series model do not lead us to meaningful economic analysis and forecast, simply because they lack theoretical contents.

Given the existence of environmental and energy resource problems, the following research findings will be reviewed, concerning methods for the creation of a new socio-economic system within Japanese regional society. These research findings concern : 1) the lifecycle of technology 2) urban metabolism engineering 3) a matrix system program. Based on these findings, the necessity for a Social Field Experimental Project System will be examined.
