JOURNAL FREE ACCESSShips will always have faults in their Engine. We stress the importance of training for ship engineers to solve the faults of marine engines. The following three points in the training system for fault diagnosis have been modified and improved.
1.Utilization of fault map.
Causes of faults are listed horizontally and symptoms of faults are listed vertically.
2.Development of the tool of making data base for training system.
While referring to the fault maps, the composer can feed usefull information into the personal computer.
Since it is important to decide upon the finding order of fault parts, he can make use of AHP (Analytic Hierarchy process) in the tool.
3.Adoption an expert system written by LISP.
Trainees can take data from the data base, and they have exercise to solve the faults of marine engine with this tool.View full abstractDownload PDF (867K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn this paper we describe the outline of an instrumentation system installed in“Shiojimaru”built for Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine as the trainning ship in 1987, and its actual ship test results over past two years. First we give the concepts and construction of the system for instrumentation which are classified into two groups; one group is a system for ordinary navigation and another is for study and development of the ship and its system. Next, in order to show an composed control system concretely, we pick up the engine speed control system as an example from various control systems and then illustrate the new system composed of computers, electronic devices, local area network (LAN) system and so on. Finally, we show our experimental results obtained by actual ship tests, for example, the results of the main engine speed and the Z test controlled by a direct digital control (DDC) .View full abstractDownload PDF (695K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFukae maru (449 GT) is installed some remarkable equipments. The investigation about two matters among them is reported next.
(1) The early distortion of rubber on hydrolic vibration damper becomes about 1.3% of free length after beginning compressed. The other side, the height of supporter increases about 0.6% length owning to hot condition. These phenomena affect toward the commencement centering shafts.
(2) The capacity of her diesel generator is unsatisfied for propeller load. The Shaft-Generator-Motor (SGM) being used as syncronous motor connected directly with a propeller, it can be started as an induction motor lower and shorter than expected load and time respectively by one diesel generator. The diesel generator has as same capacity as SGM. And her speed is gained 5-6 kt with 65% load on diesel generator.View full abstractDownload PDF (685K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSShaft generators driven by main engines have been increaseingly employed by ships to save evergy and labor. For shaft generator system, systems eguipped with thyristor inverters or differential planet gears are often used, however, they are required to be improved in reliability, effeciency and economic performance.
A newly our developed shaft generator/motor system meets these requirements. This generator system is unique and first in the world as described below.
The rotor (field), connected to the main engine shaft, can change its rotating speed. The armature, which is rotatery, can also be controlled to change speed independently of the rotor (field) .

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe features of the new Japanese two deep submergence vehicles are presented.
Shinkai 6500, a manmed research submergence vehicle for Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), is being built by MHI Kobe shipyard. The vehicle can dive to 6500m deep and explore the slopes of trenches around Japan. That is very important to the geophysical study of the deep ocean floors. The vehicle is small in size and light in weight and has advanced capability in research and observation system, comparing to the predecessor Shinkai 2000. MARCAS 2500, a remotely operated vehicle, was built by MHI Kobe shipyard and delivered to Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd. (KDD) in 1987. The vehicle can dive to 2500m deep and operate for the construction and maintenance of under water communication cables.View full abstractDownload PDF (5654K)
