The high pressure steam source with a new supercharged once-through boiler has been installed in Ship Research Institute to perform fundamental experiments and researches for the future development of marine boilers.
This paper describes the hardware system, software system and experimental results about the computer control system which is designed to control the high pressure steam source.
The computer control system consists of a central processor unit, a type-writer, a real time controller, an operator console table and an auxiliary console panel for DDC.
    Main functions are as follows:
    (1) Direct Digital Control of outlet steam pressure, temperature and or steam rate of the boiler with a good accuracy for wide range of power demand (10-100% power rate)
    (2) Automatic monitoring of the whole system
    (3) Automatic start and stop operations of the boiler system
    (4) Evaluation of modern control logics applied to the boiler operation (fault diagnosis, security control and optimum control)
In this report, DDC system and its automatic tuning system are stated in detail. PID and finite settling time control mode are tested and as the automatic tuning system a modified “ultimate sensitivity method” is developed for the former and process parameter estimation by the least squares method is applied for the latter.
The computer control system is successfully tested and safety in operation is increased very much.
