    A brief review of recent free electron laser (FEL) experiments is given. Stress is on the essential characters and present status of so-called “free electron laser” and crucial technical problems involved in the experiments. Also referred are some other members of FEL family.

    Computer Simulations in tokamak research are reviewed on the following problems : i) equilibrium and ballooning stability analysis, ii) ideal MHD linear stability analysis by means of ERATO code, iii) nonlinear three dimensional MHD simulations and iv) one and half dimensional tokamak transport simulation. On each subject, the methods of computation, the present status of research and future trends are described.

    Preliminary results are presented with some analytical calculations for thermal shock fractures of first-wall material candidates under plasma disruption heating conditions. A 120 keV-90 A ion source has been used as an energy source to heat large specimens with heat fluxes of about 9 kW/cm2 for pulse length of about 57 msec. Materials examined here are graphite (POCO), SiC, AlN, TiC-coated graphite, and sus 304. The SiC and AlN specimens were completely broken by only one thermal shock. The web-like surface cracks with a depth of about 0.6 mm were created in the tungsten specimen during five shots. No apparent destructive changes were observed in the graphite specimen.
