A study is made of the nuclear characteristics of the blanket design that employs a high pressure H
2 or D
2 gas as insulator between the wall and the plasma.
The H
2 gas blanket could obtain higher energy deposition than the D
2 due to the higher energy release by the (n, γ) reaction. The pressure required for effectively attenuating the neutron flux in the gas insulator is above 400-500 atm for D-T and Cat. D neutron sources, and above 100 atm for D-D.
