CIT (Compact Ignition Tokamak) project is planned to be the major next project in US magnetic fusion program. The mission of the CIT will be to realize, study and optimize fully ignited plasma discharges. This review introduces the conceptual design of CIT, especially on key technologies and physical bases which was presented at technical review committee meeting held in January, 1988, at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

During the last several month of JT-60 operation in 1987, experiments in hydrogen plasmas have been undertaken with up to 3.2MA of plasma current on limiter discharges. The maximum electron density of 13 × 1019m-3 and the energy confinement time of 0.15-0.18 sec were obtained with heating power of 13-20MW. The total plasma stored energy of 3.1MJ, and Re (0) τE of 1.4-1.8×1019m-3sec were achieved. Many short periods of H-mode phase are found in outside X-point divertor discharges with NB or NB+RF (LH or IC) heating power of more than 16MW and electron density of 2-4.5×1019m-3.
