A great many soil classification systems have been proposed in Japan since 1960. They can be grouped into two major currents, derived from that of USSR and that of USA, respectively. On precise examinations both are clarified to have, however, many common and different but adjustable items on the basic concepts and categories. Deduced from the author's discussions, the following categories may be set up in a soil classification system, such as soil group, soil type, soil subtype and soil species which are accidentally akin to Klassen, Typen, Subtypen and Varietaten in MUCKENHAUSEN (1962), respectively. Further researches will be needed for other higher and lower categories to be established.
