Amotion test of three-dimensional circular interpolation under simultaneous five-axis control will be conducted as one of the acceptance tests for five-axis machining centers. A number of errors are appeared in this measured trajectory by means of ball bar. Thus, the standardization of test conditions suitable to the five-axis machining centers with a tilting rotary table is being discussed. In this paper, the influence of the test conditions is investigated based of the measurements and simulation; the test conditions are the position of table side ball of the ball bar, the half apex angle, inclination angle and radius of the cone-frustum, and the feed speed at the measurement.

In a conventional automatic programming system developed for turning with a CNC lathe, NC data such as tool path, feed and rotational speed of spindle are automatically generated, when the desired shape of products, and tool and workpiece materials are specified. However, for turning of a workpiece having large length and small diameter, variation in the finished diameter along the rotational axis is yields due to workpiece deflection caused by the cutting force. To reduce the machining error in the diameter, elastic deformation of the workpiece due to cutting force, whose components are obtained through a cutting model and energy method proposed by Usui et al., is considered in the generating process of the tool path. In this report, the results for a shaft that requires machining using multiple tool paths are shown. From the comparison of the machining error obtained with turning test for compensated and uncompensated tool paths, it is confirmed that the proposed method is effective in reduction of machining error.

Drive control of machine tools is based on linear interpolation drive. When machining of curved surfaces using linear interpolation drive, in the cases of small distance driving, there are problems that feedrate does not reach the indicated speed and machining accuracy and surface quality decrease due to big acceleration and deceleration for control axis. In order to solve such problems, a method to generate cutter location data under consideration of sampling time of the control system is proposed in this study. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by simulations and experiments.

In recent production of mechanical system, industrial productions need to be light weight and precise. So thin-structured parts making is more needed. But thin-structured parts are low rigid. So the effect of deformation is large. To precise machining, we need to evaluate actual parts deformation. Therefore on-machine estimation is important thing. The purpose of the research is to investigate an on-machine estimation method which can evaluate actual thin-structured parts deformation. In this research, we proposed estimation method that is combined the FEM analysis data with local measured strain data. And we applied the estimation method to multi-point holding. In this paper, we report the evaluation result of the estimation method.

A linear-motor-driven table supported by hydrostatic water bearing was developed in our earlier experiment. The table is supported by a single-sided-recess type bearing and preloaded by attractive force of the linear-motor magnet. Eccentric excitation force is generated during the table motion due to the attractive-force change of the magnet truck. The resulting maximum pitching angle was 0.25″and the pitching interval was 30mm, which equals to the permanent-magnet interval of the magnet track. In order to suppress the pitching motion, a magnetic balancer is added at the end of the table slider. The effect of the position of magnetic balancer on table pitting motion is experimentally investigated.

The UBMS (UnBalanced Magnetron sputtering) method is applied to the coated end mills and some kinds of such tools are used in high-speed milling of SUS304. This coating film is designed to improve lubricating ability rather than heat resistance. Lower cutting temperature is measured with these UBMS-type TiCN-coated tools than the ordinary AIP-coated tools in high-speed side milling without coolant.

Turning characteristics of austenitic stainless steel SUS304 with an actively driven rotary lathe tool is invented from the thermal aspects. The tool temperature during one revolution of this spinning tool is measured using a newly assembled two-color pyrometer. There is an optimum tool rotational speed at which the tool temperature is at a minimum with respect to the cutting conditions.

In this study, the method of tool edge temperature using two-color pyrometer in wet cutting is proposed. Using this method, the high pressure air supplied from small hole for an optical fiber prevents coolant from adhering to the optical fiber edge and makes temperature measuring possible. Air pressure never affects tool edge temperature measured using two-color pyrometer. In this way, the tool edge temperature of CBN and Poly Crystalline Diamond (PCD) tool is measured in turning of Ti-6Al-4V. As a result, the tool edge temperature is increases rapidly with the increase of cutting speed. In dry turning of Ti-6Al-4V, PCD tool edge temperature is almost 100oC lower compared with CBN tool edge temperature. Supplying coolant, CBN tool edge temperature is reduced about 70 oC and PCD tool edge temperature is reduced about 340 oC compared with tool edge in dry turning resistivity.

For satisfying the demand for a high-speed precision tool spindle used in the precision machining with small diameter of tools, we proposed a hybrid air-bearing spindle employing aerostatic bearings and an active aerodynamic bearing that suppresses the spindle vibration. In the present paper, the effect of some improvements in the mechanism such as the driving motor or the aerodynamic bearing on the performance of the hybrid spindle is discussed.

It was reported previously that development of composite abrasives considering cleanability of workpeace. Glass polishing using composite abrasives improved cleanability and the polishing characteristics in comparison with a conventional polishing. In this study, we investigated the application of the composite abrasives to polishing of various materials which are metals, semiconductor and optical materials. For composite abrasives adapted to various materials polishing, we supply new manufacturing method of composite abrasives and new mother particle. The experimental results showed that the removal rate of metal polishing using composite abrasives can be improved by employing suede type polishing pad.

Our main purposes were to establish ultraviolet-ray aided machining and clarify the chemical and mechanical polishing mechanism. The specific goals were to lessen the deformities in the machined surface, to make the crystal grains on the machined surface appear, and to apply this machining at the sub-micrometer level instead of at the nanometer level. The present study targets the development of a polishing technique that uses a photocatalyst and a fluorescent substance excited by an ultraviolet ray. Nickel (hereafter referred to as Ni) was polished chemically and mechanically at the micrometer level under an ultraviolet-ray irradiation. Measurements clarified that TiO2 of 0.1-μm grain size mechanically polished the Ni, and Cathilon (a luminous dye; Cathilon Brilliant Flavine: hereafter referred to as Cathilon) chemically polished Ni. A flat surface was attained on the Ni by chemical and mechanical polishing using both the TiO2 and Cathilon, when they were irradiated by an ultraviolet ray. Further measurements indicated that the corrosion of Ni surface became large under an ultraviolet-ray excitation. The eroded trace was large when Cathilon is rich. Though much TiO2 tends to roughen Ni surface, the flat surface was obtained in the case of much TiO2 and much Cathilon due to both equivalent influences.

The reaction-sintered (RS) SiC is very useful material for mold of glass lens, parts of equipment for fabrication of semiconductor device, and substrate of space telescope. However, it is difficult to obtain high precision surface efficiently because of its high hardness and chemical inertness. We proposed a new finishing technique named plasma-assisted polishing (PAP) which combining the irradiation of atmospheric pressure water vapor plasma and abrasive polishing. The processed surfaces were observed by microscopic interferometer, AFM, and SEM to evaluate the roughness and scratches. The observation results showed that plasma assisted polishing using CeO2 abrasive obviously decreased the scratches on the surface compared with the surface polished by diamond abrasive though these two kinds of abrasive had the same average diameter of 0.5 μm. In the case of low RF power condition (12 W), protrusions with a height of 10-20 nm were formed on the surface. In contrast, increase of the RF power (30 W) resulted in no protrusion and surface roughness was improved from 4.625 nm rms to 2.314 nm rms.
