To reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve energy security in Japan, as consumers, buildings are required to utilize renewable energy sources and energy storage devices. However, the widespread use of renewable energy has created challenges, such as unstable grid operation due to capacity overload. The purpose of this paper is to propose a formulation methodology for a model predictive control (MPC), that minimizes the electricity costs of a real building under an assumed dynamic bill system. This paper describes the energy simulation developed for a research facility (Table 1) with a total floor area of approximately 11,610 m2 and also, shows the formulation of MPC and its effectiveness through the developed energy simulation (Figure 3). The variables for the MPC are the output from the storage battery during the predicted period. The monthly simulation results showed that an approximate 29 % reduction in the electricity cost on average is possible under certain conditions.
