Since ancient times in Japan, wooden tanks have been used as objects of storage and as barrels for fermentation. From the beginning of the 1900s, chemical industrial use of wooden tanks has increased, and they began to be used as water tanks since the late 1950s. Currently, wooden tanks are used as water tanks with capacities exceeding 200 t in important installations such as public facilities and hospitals. To date, wooden tanks have been designed and manufactured based on experiential knowledge, but there is little experimental knowledge in the event of an earthquake. This study aims to obtain the underlying data regarding the regular distorted state and earthquake resistance of a wooden tank by measuring the distortion of steel materials and wood, which are the main constructional elements of the wooden tank at the time of manufacture and storage of water.
