1) The purpose of the experiment is to find the principles governing (1) aversive
US, (2) respiratory response by “classical” conditioning procedure, (3) restriction of subject's behavior situations.
2) The subjects were 48 albino rats,
CS was light,
US was 0.3 mA. AC. through the constant current device, the length of the
CS was 1.5 sec. and that of the
US was 3.0 sec.
3) After four days training, the subjects were divided into four groups. In the first two groups (I, II.) the
CS and the on-set of the
US closed and the latter two groups (III, IV.) the
CS and the termination of the
US (reduction point) closed.
4) The results were as follows : the efficiency of the conditioning, I and II > III and IV in the speed of reaching criterion, and II> I and IV, III > IV in intensity of
CS. These data show that the essential principle is that of contiguity in that situation stated in 1).
5) As to the comments made by 1951 Psychol. Review which pointed the defects of the similar experiments as this, this experiment corrected the greater part of the defects.
6) In the backward-type group, some special responses (
Q response) were seen.
