The use of massage-and bath dates from ancient times, but the scientific, especially medical investigation concerning it seems to be of recent origin Accordingly, we find only few literatures of medical studies about the effects of sportmassage or bath on the carbohydrate and lipids metabolisms of human blood. Consequently, in the present work, the behaviours of blood cell counting, blood suger and lipid contents of many champions of Karate, rowing and bicycle by sportmassage (whole body massage lasted 45 minutes) after each game, of common healthy or sick (diabetes and spinal caries) persons by massage at quiet times, and, of common helthy persons by warm bath (water bath 42°C, air bath 50°C each for 20 minutes) were observed.
The results of these experiments were summarised as follows;
1) The increases of red cell number after games (Karate, rowing and bicycle) were further continued by sportmassage, while after the massage at quiet times the number increased only slightly. The increase after warm water or air bath was not striking.
2) White cell number that multiplied after games was reduced by the massage, on the contrary, the number at quiet times was increased by this. The number was also increased by warm bath and recovered after 1/2 hours rest.
3) The blood suger in both cases of after games and at quiet times always showed tendency to be decreased by the massage. After warm bath, particulary water bath, it decreased similarly.
4) Of blood lipids, the phospholipid contents which changed after games nearly recovered, especially in blood corpuscle, by the massage to the values before the games, but at quiet times only by the massage reduced. By warm bath also decreased greatly after 30 minutes' rest following water bath. The iodine number of phospholipid remained unaffected in all cases.
Free and bound cholesterol contents were almost constant in various conditions.
No definite influence of masssage after the gemes was indicated on the neutral fat contents, while they incresed after massage at quiet times and decreased after warm bath slightly. The iodine number of neutral fat never changed.
In total lipids contents of blood, especially of blood, corpuscle after games the recovering to the values before the games was quickened by massage, but at quiet times the contents were reduced by massage and bath.
5) Above described effects apparently suggest to indicate that sportmassage and warm bath stimulate the blood circulation and metabolisms of carbohydrate and lipids of blood, thus the recovery of weariness after exercise was quickened.
