In the past, virtual prototyping technologies simply did not deliver the right answers in time to impact the ongoing design process. Very often, CAE has been used for design verification and has run almost outside the process - not as a proactive design optimization tool. Raw processing speed has not been the real bottleneck. The fundamental problem lies with the lack of accurate system-level prediction technologies and with the sheer number of different software tools that are in use at many companies today. A lot of time is lost in non value-added engineering effort - dealing with many barely compatible software tools for just one attribute at a time, transferring data from one environment to another, rebuilding models, and remeshing.

This paper describes the renovated version of PAM-CRASH that is the crash analysis software based on the finite element method and the explicit time integration scheme. The contents of the renovation consists of three points : (i) software architecture renovation. (ii) practical DMP (Distributed Memory Parallel) solution. (iii) new failure criteria for material and spot. The software architecture renovation realizes the complete memory allocation and the single source code for SMP (Sheared Memory Parallel) and DMP. The DMP version provides the user the practical solution of the huge crash model. The new failure criteria enhance reproductiveness or predictiveness of the material behavior. PAM-CRASH V2002 is the second generation of the crash software.

This paper presents how an FEA model using MSC.NASTRAN was developed to simulate dehydration dynamics of a washing machine with spinning basket rotating about vertical axis. Gyroscopic effect, centrifugal forces, and self-balancing mechanism (liquid balancer) associated with rotating structures were considered in the simulation. Using the model, frequency response analysis was performed to simulate response of non-rotating structures in operating test. Static analysis was performed to simulate strain and stress of rotating structures at a discrete operating speed. The model was validated successfully with operating test data measurement. This paper also presents how the operating test was performed to understand dynamics of the dehydration process. The test was performed by installing an unbalance mass to the spinning basket based on manufacturer's design standard.

Recently, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a fundamental tool for thermal designer of electronic equipment. However, there are some problems related to the difficulty of modeling and computational time for applying the CFD to the thermal review at an early design stage. Then we developed a thermal tem plate system using Nodal Network Method (NNM), which made possible to review the thermal problem in a short time. In this paper, we applied this approach to the thermal design of a large-size closed cabinet, and showed the practicality and effectively of our method. Designer can change each analysis parameter by himself by editing the template GUI, and can predict the thermal distribution of the product before making the proto-type.

In design process, not one characteristic but are multiple characteristics should be offten considered. If all of the characteristics have no correlation each other, design problem would be very easily solved, however, in most of actual cases, there are significant correlations between those design characteristics and it makes design review difficult. Such kind of problem has been studied as Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) or Multi-Objective Programing (MOP) by researchers and have not been perceived as general tools for designers. Nowadays, however, such kind of tasks to meet several conflicting design/production requirements became common due to heigh product requirements. And design tools, which enable designer to perform MCDM or MOP in their usual design tasks, are desired. iSIGHT is a MDO (Multi-Disciplinary Optimization) software system developed by Engineous Software Inc. and has numbers of practical applications in design optimization problems. This paper introduces current functions and recent development efforts on MCDM and MOP in iSIGHT.

In order to develop and design a satellite considering a global competitiveness, it is indispensable to clear off the wall (the barrier to design) between the design areas in a satellite design, and to improve a new design environment in which designers can manage and organize the satellite information. In this research, to free the barrier to design between designers, the authors propose the smart master model of a satellite that can integrate with a few analysis systems in a satellite design. These analysis systems are the orbit calculation, thermal analysis, and structural analysis, etc. The authors have developed the integrated design environment for satellite in which designers can trial-and-error designing and evaluating instantaneously.

Many of today's products are so complex that no single company has all the necessary knowledge about either the product or the required processes to completely design and manufacturing. The customer-supplier relationship has undergone substantial transformation over the past 30 years, from a traditional relationship centered largely on the customer towards a current focus on partnership and lean supply. Some of the benefits of Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) in New Product Development (NPD) process include : reduced development cost; higher quality with fewer defects; reduced time to marker; supplier-oriented innovation; and so on. This paper discusses the strategic integration between customer and supplier in NPD process. We typify the customer/supplier collaborative activities in NPD process. Then, an implementation perspective for realizing computer-supported ESI in NPD process are presented, based on our ANetCoDE which is a hybrid multi-agent architecture for distributed collaborative engineering environment. Some key features are discussed, including collaborative specification establishment, solid model-based communication and agent-based collaboration through the medium of "guest agent" and "site agent".

Rencently, a designer demands the design supporting system with management of design knowledge. Although the definition and modeling of knowledge are very difficult, it is important to manage the past design process and the past product information. Authors have been developing the top down oriented design system that supports design from the concept design to the detailed design. In this system, the network model of entities and attributes, that express the product information, is grown up in proportion as stepwise design. This paper proposes the framework for the use of information on the past design process and product in this system. The system functions of copying the partial network and joining it with other networks are represented as managing of the design knowledge.

As current product design processes tend to be distributed across numerous technical fields, it has become increasingly difficult for the detailed design arising in each field to preserve the early overall design concepts that ideally should be incorporated in the final product. This paper proposes a collaborative decision method that achieves these kinds of product development targets. First, complicated relationships between product criteria and design variables are approximated with quadratic polynomials using the Response Surface Method. Influences of design variables with respect to criteria are calculated from the equation results, and are applied to estimates provided by enterprise sections such as design units, research teams, and so on, to achieve a clear and detailed picture of potential product performance. Based on these estimated relationships, all sections can offer more effective design alternatives and predict the product performance. Moreover this method can also predict and evaluate the development costs required to achieve a range of development goals.

This paper discusses an advanced collaborative system that considers the constraint relationships among design criteria. In real design environments, design criteria frequently change, causing optimization difficulties and inefficiencies. This paper presents a newly developed optimization technique based on Hierarchical Genetic : Algorithms (HGA) that is integrated with several additional modules, enabling the smooth optimization of dynamic problems in which design criteria frequently change. An equally important issue is the presentation of necessary design information output to decision-makers. This paper discusses the use of the proposed system to create design constraint condition graphs that are presented to decision-makers during the optimization process, enhancing system development productivity.

The embodied virtual communication system provides two remote talkers with the communication environment sharing the embodied interaction through VirtualActors including themselves in the same virtual face-to-face scene. In this paper, we perform the communication experiment using the system under three conditions of free conversation, one-way speech and one-way speech using the scene in which the head motion of listener's Virtual Actor is inconsistently stopped. It is found that the cross-correlation between the talker's voice and listener's head motion in the inconsistent condition decreases at the significance level of 1% in comparison with the normal representation, which demonstrates the importance of talker's head motion in embodied communication. The result also demonstrates that the embodied virtual communication system is effective in the analysis by synthesis of embodied communication.

In this experiment, the course which imitated the highway by the driving simulator. The driver is run using the steering assistance system. The system stops after that and the driver makes a lane change. In this analysis we compared the driver vehavior in this case with the case where the system is not used. Consequently, the driver regained the feeling of steering promptly after the system stop, and vehicles did not depart from a lane. However, the driver behavior is better after the system stop when the degree of devotion to driving of the driver at the time of system operation is high.

In the co-creative activity, emergence of a co-exciting feeling and a co-sharing of context during all participants are important. In this study, changes in respiratory action and electromyogram during the match of the conventional Kendo robot system were measured. And a device (timing display device) was developed to transmit the interval between zero-cross points of the rhythm controller, as a force tactile sensation stimulus to the remote opponent in order to support the co-share of the timing. From the result, it was observed that there was a electromyogram at a level of ±0.5 [V] 0.2-0.3 [s] just before the swinging of the sword in the game-decision stage. And there's a possibility that the co-sharing of the timing (or Maai) between remote locates can be supported by sending physical signals, which are not related to your consciousness, to your opponent.

It is because that feeling and atmosphere of those who are in an image can not be transmitted easily. Then, we developed two kinds of haptic interfaces which can express mental situation of persons between remote places. One is the haptic interface which can express change of breathing rhythm. The other is the haptic interface which aimed to express active act and passive feeling simultaneously. In the former, we acquired a prospect that the change of person's feeling is shared among many people simultaneously. In the latter, we contemplated principle to create togetherness that my own hand is wrapped in by other person's hand.

This paper describes a haptic device for Aerial Drawing through embodiment. We have studied the system that can draw freely in the air by the fingertip. And in the series of this study, it was reported that the location disparity between the virtual objects and the real fingertip may cause a sense of incongruity during drawing activities. In order to solve the problem, we developed the haptic device that applies force feedback to a fingertip under drawing and a few drawing experiments were performed using this device. As a result the sense of the disparity of the position sensation of the finger under drawing tends to become reduced. This result indicates the possibility of emerging a certain function to weaken this sense of incongruity.

Collaboration consists mainly of two tasks; one is the treatment of individual task by each, the other is communication with each other. In our previous paper, it is indicated that the viewpoint from which the user can see the partner's avatar and his own avatar in the same virtual space is useful for smooth communication. However, the motion images including the user's own avatar might discourage him from shape evaluation. This paper investigates the influence of difference of two viewpoints; one is the viewpoint from which the user can see his own motions through the translucent avatar, the other is the viewpoint from which user can see only his forearms' motions, on shape evaluation in virtual space. The result indicates that the viewpoint from which the user can see only his forearms' motions in preferred for the shape evaluation in virtual space.

This paper proposes a computerized method of industrial design aid by suggesting combinations of shape- and color-characteristics different from existing designs as hints for new design. First, feature indices to represent and quantify shape- and color- characteristics of industrial designs are mathematically defined. Then, the feature indices are calculated for an existing industrial design case obtained as 3-D CAD data or 3-D shape scanning data of real product. The calculated feature indices represent the design case in a feature index space. By collecting such feature index vectors for existing design cases and finding new points in the space which are as far from any of the existing vectors as possible, new combinations of shape- and color- characteristics different from existing designs should be obtained. Also, computational method of generating and visualizing 3-D shape examples that have specified shape- and color feature indices is introduced. The proposed method is implemented as a program using simulated annealing and applied to designs of "card stands".

It is often said that it might be very important to take Kansei, some kind of human sensuous inspiration, into account of design. And it becomes more and more important especially in the design of products whose functions are saturated and it becomes difficult to gain competitive power only by adding a new function. In those cases, it is difficult to gain competitive power by discounting its prices nor making efforts in human engineering sense of ease in handling. In such cases, visual design will be more important, so that visual designers become key of success in the product. However, Kansei design used to be based on questionnaires to the customers, and it is basically based on putting emphasis on the greatest common of them. But, in most of cases visual designers would like to show their feelings into design and lead majority to his or her sense. So that Kansei design database is often useless to them and it is sometimes obstacle for their creativity. In this paper, we will propose the Kansei design system which is based on image processing system and qualifying image by using Fourier transform and make up a new visual design by using those Fourier transform data. As an example, we have used the proposed system in design of doors. We have verified the results by inspiration test and brain test and showed a possibility of the proposed method.

The objective of this study is to investigate a remote laboratory on electric motors using high-speed networks between Japan and the U.S. A client situated at Stanford University (California, U.S.A) accessed the remote lab system set up in Japan. Through this client, the remotely located user operated the motors and conducted experiments. The remote lab was conducted over a high quality digital video conference system, making it possible for both sides to communicate smoothly with each other, and for the remote user to observe close-up details of the lab including the motor's fine movements. Using a network bandwidth of 15-30 Mbps, the authors were able to demonstrate the validity of the remote lab experiment.

Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology started to join the postgraduate design course ME210/ME310 at Stanford from the year 1998 by using a network. This course in run based on Project Based Learning. ME210 is a preparatory course for ME310,which is focused upon teaching students how to work together as a team and which was run from September to December, 98. An assignment of developing a paper bike was given. Three students formed a team on each side and they collaborated over the network alone. ME310 is a course with corporate partners. Corporate partners provides students real issues in their companies and students work together to solve the problem and to develop a prototype that demonstrates how effective their solutions are. In our case, Toyota provided an assignment to develop a parallel parking support system and they asked us to demonstrate its usefulness on a real car. How we could get over the cultural differences and how we could really achieve good teamworking across the national boundaries over the network will be discussed.

This report describes global PBL course of design which was shared over the network between Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology and Stanford University during the years 2000 and 2001. The assignment during this period was to detect the dangero us conditions of a driver. TMIT and Stanford team studied several methods for detecting physiological conditions of a driver as well as detecting dangerous body movements. As the former needs too expensive equipments, both teams came up with the feasible objective of detecting dangerous movements of a driver. Although the goal is coordinated and is the same between TMIT and Stanford teams, they developed different systems.

A simple common path interferometer is proposed to measure displacement of a specular object. The interferometer consists of a focusing lens, a beam splitter, a plane mirror and the specular object. Interference fringes obtained by the interferometer are straight lines with the equal interval if there is no aberration of the focusing lens. As both optical path in the interferometer are symmetrical, only effect of a coma aberration is contributed for the formation of the interference fringe, even if there are many aberration in the focusing lens. An interval of the interference fringe narrows in proportion to an absolute value of the displacement of the specular object. The displacement is obtained by analyzing the interval of the interference fringe. The experiments were carried out in order to confirm the validity of the proposed interferometer. When the displacement of 10nm amplitude was given at 1Hz, the displacement was detected by the proposed interferometer.

A technique for calibrating the profile error of the probe sphere of a contact-type displacement probe for on-machine measurement of aspherical profiles in nanometer accuracy was proposed. A sphere workpiece with unknown profile error is used as the sample for calibration. The workpiece, which is mounted on the machine spindle and is rotated by the spindle, is measured by the displacement probe. At each position of the probe, the profile of the workpiece over one rotation are sampled by the probe. An average of the data removes the influences of the workpiece profile error and the spindle error, resulting in on accurate measurement of the profile error of the probe sphere. Calibration of the whole probe sphere can be realized through moving the probe over the workpiece. Experiments of on-machine profile measurement of an aspherical lens were carried out after calibration of the probe sphere.

In this paper, we propose an absolute length measurement method with sub-nanometer accuracy by combining a regular crystalline lattice with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and the phase modulation homodyne laser interferometry. An arbitrary length can be determined using fine scale (=lattice spacing on crystalline surface) and coarse scale (=wavelength). With the method, an arbitrary length can be represented as Nλ+Md, where N and M are integer, λ is the wavelength and d is the lattice spacing. The phase modulation homodyne laser interferometry can determine the length of interest with picometer resolution, when the optical path difference is the wavelength times integer. The length shorter than the wavelength can be determined using the regular crystalline surface and STM. For the preliminary experiment, the measurement instrument for lattice spacing on crystalline surface was developed and evaluated.

We has developed an ultrahigh-accuracy 3-D profilometer, which, using a new, in-house-developed atomic force probe, has an accuracy of 10nm. It is capable of measuring corners as small as 2 μm in radius and can cover an area up to 400x400x90(mm), providing a powerful boost to nano-level processing. A spherical lenses, semiconductor wafers, hard discs, all these products, and many others, could not exist without high precision measurements during their development and manufacture. The premiere ultra high-precision three-gimensional profilometer delivers superb performance using a variety of micro-measurements for a wide range of applications.

Precision measurements of micro-patterned thin film thickness using the Nanometrological AFM were carried out. The Nanometrological AFM has a three-axis laser interferometer unit, and length standard-traceable calibration of small fine features can be operated in real scanning time. The micro-patterned thin films were fabricated by wet etching of thermally oxidized film and the thickness of thin films was checked by x-ray reflection measurement. Nominal thickness values of micro-patterned thin films were approximately 10,7,5 and 3nm respectively. Less than 0.5nm standard deviation of thickness was obtained using the Nanometrological AFM.

In this paper, we propose an optical measurement method that can be applied to the in-process measurement of microsurface profile with an accuracy on the nanometer order. Surface profiles are reconstructed by measuring two intensity distributions. Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of coherently illuminated work surface and an optical microscopic image. In this method, the whole illuminated profile can be measured at one time and no scanning procedure is imposed, and measurement is not likely to be affected by vibration and tilt of work. For higher resolution, the new instrument is designed and developed, and measurements of Fraunhofer diffraction including higher order diffraction intensities for an ultra precision grid plate standard is presented.

This paper presents an improved touch probe system for higher sensitivity. In this system, three fiber optic displacement sensors measure displacement and direction of a tip ball of the probe. Because the measuring resolution of the displacement was less than 12nm in experiments, a probe pre-travel was determined to 50nm. The variation of the pre-travel was less than 25nm in whole directions. The measuring force was approximately 0.6mN in horizontal directions, and was 9.4mN in vertical direction.

At present, compact and high precision angle sensors, which are suitable for scanning probe measurement of large surface profiles, are not commercially available. In this paper, a high precision 2-dimensional angle sensor, which can simultaneously detect two dimensional components of the surface local slope, was designed and built. The sensor was evaluated by comparing with a commercially available autocollimator. Resolution of this angle sensor was confirmed to be better than 0.01arcsec.
