Using the straight growth test method, changes in both growth promoting substances and inhibiting substances in parts of the growing point and lateral buds of the sugar cane were detected.
    1) Growth substances in parts of growing point were examined from mid-June till December. At early developing time, only promoters were detected and inhibitors appeared after development. On the progress of development, the former decreased, on the contrary, the latter increased, then at mid-September both substances kept about the same balance. After that, relationship of the season of both substances went adversely, until none of promoters and only inhibitors were found at late season.
    2) Growth substances of lateral buds were examined from mid-August till mid-December. It was noticed that through the period, contents of promoters were very high in upper buds and less in both middle and lower buds, on the contrary inhibitors showed adverse appearance, but they could not be found in the upper buds at mid-August.
    3) Two kinds of inhibitors were detected, one of which appearing on Rf value between 0.9 and 1.0 was the main substances through the season and the other on Rf value between 0.3 and 0.5 occurred at the late growing period.

A plant morphological investigation was conducted on Taiwan-yamacha growing at Lienhuachih and Mt. Shuisheta districts in the middle Formosa and at Liukuei district in the south. From the results of that investigation, it was found that the tea plant growing at Lienhuachih showed treetype having rough branching and a maximum hight of 12 meter but on the contrary the tea plant growing at Mt. Shuishete or Liukuei showed shrub-type having relatively tight branching.
No clear difference in the characteristics of leaf was observed between tea plant growing in these different districts. Usually eight pairs in number of veins were observed. New buds and young leaves of the tea plant growing at Lienhuachih were observed all containing anthocyan but those of other districts showed no uniformity in these characteristics. It was unfortunate to have no opportunity to observe the floral organ during the flowering stage of tea plant growing at Lienhuachih. On the basis of the observation for the floral organ after the flowering stage, it seemed that the ovary and the style did not show an extraordinary characteristic.
The maximum length of the scale covering the winter bud of the tea plant growing at Lienhuachih appeared 4cm and these characteristics had a resemblance to that of YABUTUBAKI (Camellia japonica) or SAZANKA (C. sasanqus) . The surface of pericarp of this fruit showed warty. From these observation, it was found that the above mentioned characteristics of Lienhuachih tea plant were markedly different from those of the known species and varieties of the tea plant.
It was proved that three strains of Taiwan.yamacha exist in Formosa which are two strains of hill district and one strain of mountain district. It cannot be concluded yet whether the Taiwanyamacha is one of the varieties of the tea plant or it belongs to quite different species. Further investigation must reveal this point.

  • 1. On the cold resistance of mosaic sugarcane

Yamasaki, one of the authors, has ever found, with others, that the resistance of mosaic diseased sugarcane to the toxicity of KClO3, a kind of herbicide, is much weaker than that of healthy one, employing with the leaves of plants concerned.
According to the results of Yamasaki's another experiment with some crop varieties differing in their cold resistance, the weaker resistance to the KClO3 toxicity correlates with their stronger cold resistance.
Hence, the authors carried out the present experiment in view of ascertaining whether this fact also may be recognized or not between mosaic diseased sugarcane and healthy one, resulting in that this suggestion is positively achieved, namely that mosaic diseased sugarcane (weaker in the toxicant resistance) proved more prominently resistant to the coldness than healthy one (more resistant to the toxicant) .
